The Required Hours

Rune needed forty volunteer hours for the college application deadline, and the animal shelter three blocks from school was, by a comfortable margin, the most convenient way to get them.

For the first few Saturdays, this felt like a fair enough arrangement. Rune showed up, walked dogs, cleaned kennels, and left with a small, satisfying stamp on a form that inched the required hours closer to complete.

"Doesn't matter to the dogs," she said once, when a different volunteer admitted, half-joking, that a parent had made her come. "They don't read college essays."

It was an offhand comment, not meant as a challenge, but it stayed with Rune longer than expected, returning at inconvenient moments over the following weeks.

Rune had, by October, become genuinely good at the work: calm with the anxious dogs, patient with the ones nobody else wanted to walk. Rune was quietly proud, too, of a particular terrier's slow progress from cowering to curious. None of that, Rune began to notice, had anything to do with the number on the volunteer form.

What unsettled Rune was not the work itself but a question that grew harder to dodge with every passing week. Was showing up so consistently, so far past the forty required hours, genuine care finally revealing itself? Or was it a more elaborate version of exactly the same performance, just one convincing enough to fool its own performer?

Had the hour requirement never existed, Rune wondered, would any of this still have happened? There was no way to run that experiment now, no clean version of the story where the college application had never entered into it at all.

Rune's forty hours had technically been complete for three weeks by then. Nobody had asked why Rune kept coming back on Saturdays anyway, and Rune found no honest way to answer even privately, let alone out loud to anyone else.

What Rune eventually settled into, without exactly resolving the question, was a kind of truce with the uncertainty itself. That truce meant showing up and doing the work well, and letting the motive stay exactly as mixed and unresolved as it probably always had been. Every volunteer who had ever walked through that door probably carried reasons they couldn't fully separate from each other, either.

The terrier, by December, let strangers pet her without flinching. Whatever had brought Rune there in the first place, it was hard to argue the hours had been wasted.
