The Assigned Argument

Vera had been ranked first in her class since sophomore year, a fact she rarely mentioned aloud but privately organized a great deal of her identity around. So when the debate coach assigned her to argue for abolishing class rank entirely, she assumed the assignment would be a formality, easily performed and quickly forgotten.

Vera había estado clasificada primera en su clase desde segundo año de secundaria, un hecho que rara vez mencionaba en voz alta pero que en privado organizaba gran parte de su identidad. "You'll argue against your own position," the coach explained, unbothered by the visible irritation on Vera's face. "That's the point. You don't really understand an argument until you've had to build the strongest possible case against yourself."

Vera started the research expecting to find weak, easily dismissed points, the kind she could recite without ever actually engaging with them. What she found instead, over two increasingly uncomfortable weeks, was evidence she could not simply wave away. There were studies on rank-driven anxiety, and testimonies from students who had quietly dropped classes they loved to protect a position they never asked to compete for.

Her research partner, Hyun, who had been assigned the opposing side defending rank, kept forwarding her counterarguments with growing frustration.

"You're supposed to be arguing this," he said, "not becoming convinced by it."

By the night before the debate, she had written a case so thorough that reading it back left her oddly unsettled. The unease came less from what it might do to her opponent and more from what it revealed about her own quiet uncertainty.

Had she been assigned to defend her actual position that week, she suspected she would have delivered something competent but thin, never forced to test it against anything sharper than her own assumptions.

The debate itself went well, by any external measure. Judges scored her performance the strongest of the round, and Hyun, gracious in defeat, admitted afterward that her case had been better built than his.

What stayed with Vera, though, walking home in the dark rather than celebrating with the team, was a question the debate itself had never required her to answer. Which version of her actual beliefs had she just spent two weeks constructing, and did either version deserve to be called the true one?

She still valued her rank. That part, at least, had not changed. What had changed, quietly and without her permission, was her certainty that valuing it made her right, or that being right and being comfortable had ever been the same thing to begin with.

She did not resolve this by the time she reached her front door. Some part of her suspected she would be carrying the unresolved shape of it for considerably longer than a single debate season.
