Portada de The Cycling Trip Storm

Sadie and Arlo had planned their cycling trip for months. It was a three-day ride between two coastal towns, with a proper route booked through small inns. The forecast had promised light rain for the second afternoon, nothing serious enough to worry about.

By late morning on day two, the sky had darkened faster than either of them expected. The wind had picked up sharply along the exposed coastal road. Arlo checked the weather app at their last rest stop and felt his stomach tighten. The storm that was supposed to arrive that evening was now forecast for early afternoon instead.

"If we keep going, we'll be right on the cliff road when it hits," Sadie said. She studied the map over his shoulder. "There's a town about eight miles back where we could wait it out."

Arlo hesitated. Going back meant losing hours of progress. It probably meant missing their reservation at the next inn, too. Pushing forward meant reaching shelter faster. That was only true if they could outrun a storm that was already gaining on them.

They chose a middle option instead: a smaller village just two miles ahead. It was marked on the map with a single café icon. It wasn't on their planned route, but it was closer than either of their other choices.

They rode hard, legs burning, as the first heavy drops started falling around them. The café, when they finally reached it, was warm and nearly empty. The owner seemed entirely unsurprised to see two soaked cyclists arrive at her door.

They waited out the worst of the storm over two cups of tea. They watched rain hammer the windows and listened to thunder roll across the water. Sadie called ahead to their inn, who happily moved their reservation back by two hours.

By the time they got back on their bikes, the sky had cleared to a pale, washed-out blue. The coastal road smelled like wet stone and salt. They agreed, laughing, that the café's tea had been the best part of the whole trip so far.
