The Flat Tire in the Mountains

Dario and Naomi had been driving for almost three hours. They were winding up through the mountains toward a cabin they'd rented for the weekend. The road grew narrower with every mile, and cell phone signal had disappeared almost an hour earlier.

Dario y Naomi llevaban casi tres horas manejando. Iban subiendo por las montañas hacia una cabaña que habían alquilado para el fin de semana. El camino se hacía cada vez más angosto, y la señal del celular había desaparecido casi una hora antes.

Just past a sharp curve, they heard a loud pop, followed by a strange thumping sound. Dario pulled over carefully onto a small patch of gravel at the edge of the road.

Justo después de una curva pronunciada, oyeron un fuerte estallido, seguido de un extraño golpeteo. Dario se detuvo con cuidado en un pequeño tramo de grava al borde del camino.

"That doesn't sound good," Naomi said, already unbuckling her seatbelt.

«Eso no suena bien», dijo Naomi, ya desabrochándose el cinturón de seguridad.

They got out and found the back-left tire completely flat, torn open by something sharp on the road. Neither of them had ever changed a tire alone. They'd both watched videos about it at some point.

Bajaron del auto y encontraron la llanta trasera izquierda completamente ponchada, rasgada por algo filoso en el camino. Ninguno de los dos había cambiado una llanta solo antes. Ambos habían visto videos sobre eso en algún momento.

"We should have practiced this before we left," Dario admitted, opening the trunk to look for the spare.

«Deberíamos haber practicado esto antes de salir», admitió Dario, abriendo el maletero para buscar la llanta de repuesto.

Fortunately, the car had a full-size spare and a tool kit tucked beneath the trunk floor. Naomi pulled out her phone, hoping to find instructions, but there was no signal at all. They would have to figure it out together, using only the diagrams printed on the jack itself.

Por suerte, el auto tenía una llanta de repuesto de tamaño completo y un juego de herramientas guardado bajo el piso del maletero. Naomi sacó su celular, con la esperanza de encontrar instrucciones, pero no había señal en absoluto. Tendrían que resolverlo juntos, usando solo los diagramas impresos en el propio gato hidráulico.

It took them almost forty minutes, since neither wanted to make a mistake that could leave them stranded. Dario held the jack steady while Naomi loosened the bolts. They switched roles whenever one of their arms got tired. By the time the spare was finally in place, both of their hands were covered in dust.

Les tomó casi cuarenta minutos, ya que ninguno quería cometer un error que los dejara varados. Dario sostenía el gato con firmeza mientras Naomi aflojaba los tornillos. Cambiaban de papel cada vez que a alguno se le cansaba el brazo. Para cuando la llanta de repuesto finalmente quedó en su lugar, ambos tenían las manos cubiertas de polvo.

"We actually did it," Naomi said, wiping her forehead and grinning with relief.

«De verdad lo logramos», dijo Naomi, secándose la frente y sonriendo con alivio.

"Next time, I'm definitely watching one of those videos again before we leave the house," Dario replied. He laughed at how nervous they'd both been.

«La próxima vez, definitivamente voy a volver a ver uno de esos videos antes de salir de casa», respondió Dario. Se rio de lo nerviosos que habían estado los dos.

They drove the rest of the way slowly, keeping an eye on the spare tire. They reached the cabin just as the sun began to set behind the peaks.

Manejaron el resto del camino despacio, vigilando la llanta de repuesto. Llegaron a la cabaña justo cuando el sol empezaba a ponerse detrás de las cumbres.
