Every morning at seven, Calum heard singing. It was a soft, high voice. It sang the same song again and again.
He lived on the third floor of an old building. At first, he thought it was the radio. But the voice often stopped. Then it started the same song again.
On Monday, he left his apartment early. He stood in the hallway and listened. The sound came from above. He went up the stairs to the fourth floor.
The singing was louder at the door of number 42. Calum did not knock. He felt shy and went to work.
On Tuesday, he came back. This time he knocked.
An old woman opened the door. She had white hair and a warm, blue sweater.
"Oh!" she said. "Is my singing too loud?"
"No, no," Calum said. "I only want to know who sings."
She laughed. "I sing in a choir. We have a concert on Sunday. I practice every morning at seven."
"It is a lovely song," he said.
"Thank you. Come to the concert," she said. "Sit in front, and I will sing for you."
