Edith sits in the waiting room. She holds her bag with two hands. She does not like dentists. Her old dentist moved away. This is her first visit to a new office. Her heart is fast.
伊迪丝坐在候诊室里，双手抱着她的包。她不喜欢牙医。她以前的牙医搬走了，这是她第一次来这家新诊所。她的心跳得很快。
The door opens. A woman in a white coat looks at her paper and smiles. "Edith? Please come in."
门开了。一位穿白大褂的女士看了看手里的单子，笑着说：“伊迪丝？请进。”
Edith walks in slowly and sits in the big chair. The lamp is bright. She looks at the ceiling.
伊迪丝慢慢地走进去，坐到那把大椅子上。灯很亮。她盯着天花板。
"Wait," the dentist says. She looks at Edith's face. "Edith from Room 9? Did you go to school on Pine Street?"
“等一下，”牙医说。她看着伊迪丝的脸。“九号教室的伊迪丝？你是不是在松树街上的学？”
Edith looks at her. "Yes, I did. Are you … Philippa?"
伊迪丝看着她。“是的。你是……菲利帕？”
"Yes!" The dentist laughs. "I sat behind you in math class for three years!"
“对！”牙医笑了，“我在数学课上坐在你后面，坐了整整三年！”
"You always borrowed my pencils," Edith says.
“你总是借我的铅笔，”伊迪丝说。
"And you always forgot to take them back," Philippa says. "Ten years ago, I wanted to be a dentist. Now I am one."
“你也总是忘了拿回去，”菲利帕说，“十年前，我就想当牙医。现在我真的是了。”
They talk about school. They talk about the teacher who lost his glasses every day. They remember the school trip to the farm. A goat ate Philippa's sandwich. Edith laughs so hard that her shoulders move.
她们聊起了学校，聊起那位每天都丢眼镜的老师，还回忆起去农场的那次郊游。一只山羊吃掉了菲利帕的三明治。伊迪丝笑得肩膀直抖。
Philippa looks in her mouth with a small mirror. She says, "Open wide, please." She works for a while. Edith closes her eyes and thinks about the goat.
菲利帕用一面小镜子看她的口腔，说：“请张大嘴。”她忙了一会儿。伊迪丝闭上眼睛，想着那只山羊。
"All done," Philippa says.
“好了，”菲利帕说。
"Already?" Edith asks.
“这么快？”伊迪丝问。
