The Wrong Trailhead

Silas and Priya had planned their hike for weeks. They chose a trail that promised a spectacular view from the summit. They packed water, snacks, and rain jackets, since the forecast had mentioned a small chance of afternoon showers. Everything felt ready.

When they arrived at the trailhead parking lot, there were two paths leading into the woods. Only one small sign marked the way, half hidden behind a bush. Priya was sure the correct trail started on the left, since that matched the map on her phone. Silas wasn't so certain, but he trusted her judgment and followed.

For the first hour, everything seemed normal. The path climbed steadily, and the views between the trees were lovely. But around the two-hour mark, Priya checked her phone again and frowned.

"This doesn't look right," she said. "According to the map, we should have reached a rocky overlook by now. There's nothing like that here."

They studied the map more carefully and realized their mistake. They had actually taken the trail to a completely different peak. It was longer and far more difficult than the one they had planned for. Worse, dark clouds had begun gathering above the ridge.

"We should turn back now, before the rain starts," Silas said, glancing nervously at the sky.

Priya agreed, though she hated giving up on a hike they had prepared for so carefully. They turned around and moved quickly, glancing at their watches every few minutes. The first drops of rain hit just as they reached the parking lot again. It soaked their jackets within seconds.

Once they were safely in the car, Priya laughed despite herself. "At least we know exactly which trail to take next weekend."

Silas smiled, already imagining the correct summit waiting for them. Rain or no rain, they'd try again whenever they were ready.
