The Unanswered Text

Ines sends Tobias a long message on Tuesday night. She explains why she can't make it to his sister's birthday dinner. She waits for a reply. None comes.

Ines manda uma mensagem longa para Tobias na terça-feira à noite. Ela explica por que não vai conseguir ir ao jantar de aniversário da irmã dele. Ela espera uma resposta. Nenhuma chega.

By Wednesday morning, the message still shows only one gray checkmark. Tobias hasn't opened it at all, as far as she can tell. Ines starts imagining reasons why. Maybe he's angry, maybe he's decided her explanation wasn't good enough, maybe he's pulling away.

Na manhã de quarta-feira, a mensagem ainda mostra só um tique cinza. Tobias não abriu a mensagem, pelo que ela pode ver. Ines começa a imaginar motivos. Talvez ele esteja bravo, talvez ele tenha achado a explicação dela fraca demais, talvez ele esteja se afastando.

She almost texts again, just to ask if everything is okay. But she stops herself. If she sends another message and he still doesn't answer, she'll feel even worse than she does now.

Ela quase manda outra mensagem, só para perguntar se está tudo bem. Mas se contém. Se mandar outra mensagem e ele ainda assim não responder, vai se sentir ainda pior do que já está.

Instead, she goes through her day distracted, replaying the message in her head. Did it sound like an excuse? Did she explain herself clearly, or did it come across as cold?

Em vez disso, ela passa o dia distraída, repassando a mensagem na cabeça. Será que soou como desculpa? Será que ela se explicou com clareza, ou pareceu fria?

That evening, her phone finally buzzes. It's Tobias, calling instead of texting.

Naquela noite, o celular dela finalmente vibra. É Tobias, ligando em vez de mandar mensagem.

"Sorry," he says, before she can even say hello. "My phone died Tuesday night, and I only got it charged an hour ago. I've had zero signal all day at work."

"Desculpa", ele diz, antes mesmo que ela consiga dizer alô. "Meu celular morreu na terça à noite, e só consegui carregar há uma hora. Fiquei sem sinal o dia todo no trabalho."

Ines lets out a breath she didn't realize she was holding. "I thought you were upset with me," she admits. "I've been assuming the worst since yesterday."

Ines solta um suspiro que nem sabia que estava segurando. "Achei que você estivesse chateado comigo", ela admite. "Fiquei imaginando o pior desde ontem."

"I wasn't even close to my phone," Tobias says. "I had no idea you were waiting on anything."

"Eu nem estava perto do celular", diz Tobias. "Eu não fazia ideia de que você estava esperando alguma coisa."

"I should have just called instead of guessing," Ines says. "It felt easier to wait than to ask directly."

"Eu devia ter ligado em vez de ficar adivinhando", diz Ines. "Pareceu mais fácil esperar do que perguntar diretamente."

"Let's make a deal," Tobias says. "If either of us doesn't hear back within a day, we call. No more guessing games."

"Vamos fazer um trato", diz Tobias. "Se um de nós não tiver resposta do outro em um dia, a gente liga. Chega de ficar adivinhando."

Ines agrees, relieved that the whole thing turned out to be nothing more than a dead battery. They talk for another twenty minutes. By the end of the call, she has already forgotten what she was so worried about.

Ines concorda, aliviada por tudo ter se resumido a uma bateria descarregada. Eles conversam por mais vinte minutos. No fim da ligação, ela já tinha esquecido com o que estava tão preocupada.
