The Twisted Ankle

Greta and Hugo had been hiking toward the summit for nearly four hours. Then disaster struck, right at the steepest part of the trail. Greta stepped on a loose rock and twisted awkwardly. She cried out in pain as her ankle rolled beneath her.

Greta e Hugo já caminhavam rumo ao cume havia quase quatro horas. Foi então que o desastre aconteceu, bem na parte mais íngreme da trilha. Greta pisou numa pedra solta e torceu o pé de forma estranha. Ela gritou de dor quando o tornozelo virou embaixo dela.

Hugo rushed over and helped her sit down on a nearby boulder. "How bad is it?" he asked, already reaching for the small first aid kit in his backpack.

Hugo correu até ela e ajudou-a a se sentar numa pedra próxima. "Quão ruim está?" ele perguntou, já procurando o pequeno kit de primeiros socorros na mochila.

"It hurts, but I don't think it's broken," Greta said, wincing as she gently rotated her foot. "I can probably still walk on it, just slowly."

"Dói, mas acho que não está quebrado," disse Greta, fazendo uma careta enquanto girava o pé com cuidado. "Acho que ainda consigo andar, só que devagar."

They were less than a mile from the summit. Turning back felt like giving up on something they'd been planning for months. But the trail ahead grew even steeper. Loose gravel covered it, which would be difficult to manage on an injured ankle.

Faltava menos de um quilômetro e meio para o cume. Voltar parecia desistir de algo que eles vinham planejando havia meses. Mas a trilha à frente ficava ainda mais íngreme. Cascalho solto a cobria, o que seria difícil de enfrentar com um tornozelo machucado.

"We have two choices," Hugo said carefully. "We push on to the top, or we head back down now while your ankle is still manageable."

"Temos duas opções," disse Hugo com cuidado. "Seguimos até o topo, ou voltamos agora, enquanto seu tornozelo ainda dá conta."

Greta thought about it for a long moment, testing her weight on the ankle again. The view from the summit had been the whole reason they'd chosen this trail. She hated to miss it over something so small.

Greta pensou no assunto por um bom tempo, testando o peso no tornozelo de novo. A vista do cume tinha sido o motivo principal de terem escolhido aquela trilha. Ela odiava perder isso por causa de algo tão pequeno.

"If we go up and it gets worse, we'll be in real trouble coming down," she admitted finally. "I think we should turn back, even though I really don't want to."

"Se subirmos e piorar, vamos ter sérios problemas na descida," ela admitiu por fim. "Acho que devemos voltar, mesmo que eu realmente não queira."

Hugo nodded, relieved she'd made the sensible choice rather than pushing through out of pride. He wrapped her ankle firmly with a bandage from the kit and offered his arm for support.

Hugo balançou a cabeça, aliviado por ela ter feito a escolha sensata em vez de insistir por orgulho. Ele enfaixou o tornozelo dela com firmeza usando uma bandagem do kit e ofereceu o braço para apoio.

The walk down took nearly twice as long as usual, with frequent stops to rest. By the time they reached the car, Greta's ankle had swollen noticeably, but nothing worse had happened.

A descida levou quase o dobro do tempo habitual, com paradas frequentes para descansar. Quando chegaram ao carro, o tornozelo de Greta já estava visivelmente inchado, mas nada pior tinha acontecido.

"There's always next summer," Hugo said, helping her into the passenger seat. Greta managed a tired smile. "Next time, I'm definitely wearing better boots."

"Sempre tem o verão que vem," disse Hugo, ajudando-a a entrar no banco do passageiro. Greta conseguiu um sorriso cansado. "Da próxima vez, com certeza vou usar botas melhores."
