The Song for the Baby

Gus sits in the living room with his book. His parents cook dinner in the kitchen. His new baby sister lies in her small bed.

Gus está sentado na sala com o seu livro. Os pais dele preparam o jantar na cozinha. A irmãzinha recém-nascida dele está deitada no berço pequeno.

Suddenly, the baby cries. She cries and cries.

De repente, o bebê chora. Ela chora e chora.

"Gus, please watch her," his mom calls. "We are busy."

"Gus, por favor, fique de olho nela", a mãe chama. "Estamos ocupados."

Gus goes to the baby. Her face is red, and her cry is very loud.

Gus vai até o bebê. O rosto dela está vermelho e o choro é muito alto.

First, he gives her a soft toy bear. She cries more. Then he gives her a soft ball. She pushes it away.

Primeiro, ele dá a ela um urso de pelúcia macio. Ela chora mais. Depois dá a ela uma bola macia. Ela a empurra para longe.

He brings her bottle from the table. She does not want it.

Ele traz a mamadeira dela da mesa. Ela não quer.

Gus picks her up and walks around the room. He walks and walks. His arms hurt, and the baby still cries.

Gus a pega no colo e anda pela sala. Ele anda e anda. Os braços dele doem, e o bebê continua chorando.

He is tired and a little angry. He sits on the sofa. He does not know what to do.

Ele está cansado e um pouco bravo. Senta-se no sofá. Não sabe o que fazer.

Then he opens his mouth. A silly song comes out. "The pig says moo! The cow says oink!"

Então ele abre a boca. Uma música boba sai. "O porco faz mu! A vaca faz oinc!"

The baby stops. She looks at him with big wet eyes.

O bebê para. Ela olha para ele com olhos grandes e molhados.

Gus sings the song again. The baby smiles. Then she laughs.

Gus canta a música de novo. O bebê sorri. Depois ela ri.

His mom comes from the kitchen. "How do you do that?" she asks.

A mãe dele vem da cozinha. "Como você consegue isso?", ela pergunta.

"It is a silly song," Gus says. "She loves it."

"É uma música boba", diz Gus. "Ela adora."
