Tonight is the full moon, and Cedric has a plan. He asks Nika to walk up the hill behind town with him. He brings a blanket and a flask of hot tea.
Esta noite é lua cheia, e Cedric tem um plano. Ele convida Nika para subir com ele o morro atrás da cidade. Leva um cobertor e uma garrafa térmica de chá quente.
They climb for twenty minutes and sit on a flat rock. The lights of the town are small and yellow below them. But above them, thick clouds cover the whole sky. There is no moon and there are no stars.
Eles sobem por vinte minutos e sentam numa pedra plana. As luzes da cidade são pequenas e amarelas lá embaixo. Mas acima deles, nuvens grossas cobrem o céu inteiro. Não há lua nem estrelas.
"Oh no," Cedric says. "I checked the weather. It said the sky will be clear."
"Ah, não", diz Cedric. "Eu vi a previsão do tempo. Dizia que o céu ficaria limpo."
Nika laughs. "It's fine," she says. "We have tea."
Nika ri. "Tudo bem", diz. "Temos chá."
He pours the tea into two cups. It is sweet and very hot. The air is cold, but the blanket is warm. They put the blanket over their legs and sit close. Then they talk. They talk about their families and their first days at school. They talk about the worst food they ever ate. Time goes fast.
Ele serve o chá em dois copos. Está doce e muito quente. O ar é frio, mas o cobertor é quentinho. Eles cobrem as pernas com o cobertor e sentam bem juntos. Então conversam. Falam das famílias e dos primeiros dias de escola. Falam da pior comida que já comeram. O tempo passa depressa.
At a quarter to midnight, the wind gets stronger. It pushes the clouds to the east. A white light touches the grass, and then the moon comes out. It is big, round and very bright.
Quinze para a meia-noite, o vento fica mais forte. Ele empurra as nuvens para o leste. Uma luz branca toca a grama, e então a lua aparece. Está grande, redonda e muito brilhante.
Neither of them says a word. The whole hill is silver. After two minutes, the clouds close again, and it is dark.
Nenhum dos dois diz uma palavra. O morro inteiro fica prateado. Depois de dois minutos, as nuvens se fecham de novo, e escurece.
"Did you see it?" Cedric whispers.
"Você viu?", sussurra Cedric.
Nika takes his hand. "Yes. Next month, let's wait here again."
Nika pega a mão dele. "Vi. No mês que vem, vamos esperar aqui de novo."
