Blaise borrows his dad's camera for a school trip. He takes some good pictures of his friends. That evening, he sits on his bed. He wants to look at them.
Blaise pega emprestada a câmera do pai para uma excursão da escola. Ele tira algumas fotos boas dos amigos. Naquela noite, senta na cama. Quer vê-las.
He presses a button, and the screen asks, "Delete all photos?" Blaise presses the wrong button. The screen goes dark. Then it says, "No photos."
Aperta um botão, e a tela pergunta: "Apagar todas as fotos?" Blaise aperta o botão errado. A tela escurece. Depois aparece: "Nenhuma foto."
His hands feel cold. He looks at the camera again and again. The photos of his school trip are gone. The holiday photos from the beach are gone too. They show his mum on a boat. They show his little sister asleep in the sun. Now there is nothing.
Suas mãos ficam geladas. Ele olha a câmera várias vezes. As fotos da excursão sumiram. As fotos de férias na praia também. Elas mostravam a mãe dele num barco. Mostravam a irmãzinha dormindo ao sol. Agora não há nada.
Blaise thinks of hiding the camera. He thinks of saying that it is broken. But that is not true, and he does not like lying.
Blaise pensa em esconder a câmera. Pensa em dizer que quebrou. Mas isso não é verdade, e ele não gosta de mentir.
He takes a deep breath and goes to the living room. His dad reads a book.
Respira fundo e vai até a sala. O pai está lendo um livro.
"Dad, I have a big problem," Blaise says. "I deleted all the photos on your camera by mistake. The holiday photos too. I am very sorry."
"Pai, eu tenho um grande problema", diz Blaise. "Apaguei todas as fotos da sua câmera sem querer. As fotos das férias também. Sinto muito."
His dad is quiet for a moment. Then he puts down his book. "Thank you for telling me the truth," he says. "Come with me."
O pai fica quieto por um momento. Depois larga o livro. "Obrigado por me dizer a verdade", diz. "Venha comigo."
They go to the study, and his dad turns on the computer. He opens a folder. It is full of pictures from the beach.
Eles vão ao escritório, e o pai liga o computador. Abre uma pasta. Está cheia de fotos da praia.
"I saved them here last week," his dad says. "Nothing is lost."
"Salvei tudo aqui semana passada", diz o pai. "Nada se perdeu."
Blaise breathes out slowly. "Can you show me how to do it?"
Blaise solta o ar devagar. "O senhor pode me mostrar como se faz?"
"Of course. Give me the camera."
"Claro. Me dê a câmera."
