Iker and Nils stood at the edge of a pond. It was a warm Saturday in early summer. The water looked cold and a little dark. A narrow path circled the whole pond too. Tall grass grew along both sides of the path.
Iker e Nils ficaram parados na beira de uma lagoa. Era um sábado quente no início do verão. A água parecia fria e um pouco escura. Um caminho estreito também contornava toda a lagoa. Grama alta crescia dos dois lados do caminho.
"I dare you to swim across," Nils said. Iker looked at the water and hesitated.
"Eu te desafio a atravessar nadando", disse Nils. Iker olhou para a água e hesitou.
"The path around feels safe," Iker said. "The swim looks fun," Nils said.
"O caminho ao redor parece seguro", disse Iker. "A nadada parece divertida", disse Nils.
Iker thought about both choices carefully. The path took twenty slow minutes to walk. The swim took only five fast minutes.
Iker pensou nas duas opções com cuidado. O caminho levava vinte minutos lentos para andar. A nadada levava apenas cinco minutos rápidos.
"I choose the swim," Iker finally said. Nils grinned and pulled off his shoes.
"Eu escolho a nadada", Iker finalmente disse. Nils sorriu e tirou os sapatos.
They both waded into the cool water. Iker kicked his legs and moved forward. Nils swam right beside him the whole way.
Os dois entraram na água fria. Iker chutou as pernas e seguiu em frente. Nils nadou bem ao lado dele o caminho todo.
Halfway across, Iker's legs started to feel tired. "Keep going," Nils called. "You swim well."
Na metade do caminho, as pernas de Iker começaram a ficar cansadas. "Continua", Nils gritou. "Você nada bem."
Iker pushed forward with new energy. A few minutes later, his feet touched the other shore.
Iker seguiu em frente com energia nova. Alguns minutos depois, os pés dele tocaram a outra margem.
Both boys climbed out, dripping and proud. "We did it," Iker said, catching his breath.
Os dois meninos saíram da água, pingando e orgulhosos. "Nós conseguimos", disse Iker, recuperando o fôlego.
Nils laughed and slapped Iker's back kindly. "That was a great choice," he said.
Nils riu e deu um tapinha gentil nas costas de Iker. "Essa foi uma ótima escolha", ele disse.
They sat on the grass and dried off. The sun warmed their wet shoulders slowly. The pond looked calm behind them. A small fish jumped near the shore. Nils pointed at it and laughed out loud.
Eles sentaram na grama e se secaram. O sol esquentava devagar os ombros molhados deles. A lagoa parecia calma atrás deles. Um peixinho pulou perto da margem. Nils apontou para ele e riu alto.
