The Cancelled Flight

Yara arrived at the airport two hours early, exactly as she always did. She had a connecting flight to catch in another city. She liked having plenty of time to spare.

Yara chegou ao aeroporto duas horas adiantada, exatamente como sempre fazia. Ela tinha uma conexão para pegar em outra cidade. Gostava de ter bastante tempo de sobra.

She had just settled into a seat near her gate when an announcement crackled overhead. Her flight had been cancelled due to a mechanical issue. Passengers were asked to speak with an agent at the counter.

Ela tinha acabado de se acomodar em um assento perto do portão quando um anúncio ecoou pelos alto-falantes. O voo dela tinha sido cancelado por um problema mecânico. Os passageiros foram convidados a falar com um atendente no balcão.

Yara's stomach tightened. She had a meeting the next morning that she couldn't miss. This was her only flight of the day on this route.

O estômago de Yara se apertou. Ela tinha uma reunião na manhã seguinte que não podia perder. Esse era o único voo do dia nessa rota.

The line at the counter grew quickly. Yara found herself standing behind a woman who looked just as worried as she felt. "Cancelled too?" the woman asked, glancing at Yara's boarding pass.

A fila no balcão cresceu rapidamente. Yara se viu atrás de uma mulher que parecia tão preocupada quanto ela se sentia. "Cancelado também?", perguntou a mulher, olhando para o cartão de embarque de Yara.

"Yes," Yara said. "I have a meeting tomorrow morning. I really can't be late."

"Sim", disse Yara. "Tenho uma reunião amanhã de manhã. Não posso mesmo me atrasar."

"Same here," the woman said. "I'm Leah, by the way. Have you checked for other flights already?"

"Aqui também", disse a mulher. "Ah, sou a Leah, a propósito. Você já procurou outros voos?"

Yara hadn't thought of that yet. She opened an app on her phone while they waited in line. She searched for flights leaving that evening from any nearby airport.

Yara ainda não tinha pensado nisso. Ela abriu um aplicativo no celular enquanto esperavam na fila. Procurou voos que saíssem naquela noite de qualquer aeroporto próximo.

"There's one from the smaller airport across town," Yara said, "but it leaves in ninety minutes."

"Tem um saindo do aeroporto menor do outro lado da cidade", disse Yara, "mas ele sai em noventa minutos."

"If we share a taxi, we might actually make it," Leah said. "It's worth trying, at least."

"Se a gente dividir um táxi, talvez consiga chegar a tempo", disse Leah. "Vale a pena tentar, pelo menos."

They left the line together and hailed a taxi outside. The driver, sensing their urgency, took a route through side streets to avoid the worst of the traffic.

Elas saíram da fila juntas e pegaram um táxi lá fora. O motorista, percebendo a urgência delas, seguiu por ruas secundárias para evitar o pior do trânsito.

They reached the smaller airport with twenty minutes to spare, breathless but relieved. At the counter, they discovered two seats were still available on the flight.

Chegaram ao aeroporto menor com vinte minutos de sobra, ofegantes mas aliviadas. No balcão, descobriram que ainda havia dois lugares disponíveis no voo.

"I can't believe that actually worked," Yara said, laughing as she handed over her passport.

"Não acredito que isso realmente deu certo", disse Yara, rindo enquanto entregava o passaporte.

"Desperate plans sometimes do," Leah said, grinning.

"Planos desesperados às vezes dão certo", disse Leah, sorrindo.

They boarded the plane together and, by coincidence, found their seats were only a few rows apart. As the plane lifted off, Yara pulled out her notes for the next day's meeting. She finally let herself relax.

Elas embarcaram juntas no avião e, por coincidência, descobriram que os assentos ficavam a poucas fileiras de distância. Quando o avião decolou, Yara pegou suas anotações para a reunião do dia seguinte. Finalmente deixou-se relaxar.
