The Cancelled Flight

Yara arrived at the airport two hours early, exactly as she always did. She had a connecting flight to catch in another city. She liked having plenty of time to spare.

Yara llegó al aeropuerto dos horas antes, exactamente como siempre lo hacía. Tenía un vuelo de conexión que tomar en otra ciudad. Le gustaba tener bastante tiempo de sobra.

She had just settled into a seat near her gate when an announcement crackled overhead. Her flight had been cancelled due to a mechanical issue. Passengers were asked to speak with an agent at the counter.

Apenas se había acomodado en un asiento cerca de su puerta cuando un anuncio crepitó por los parlantes. Su vuelo había sido cancelado por un problema mecánico. Se pidió a los pasajeros hablar con un agente en el mostrador.

Yara's stomach tightened. She had a meeting the next morning that she couldn't miss. This was her only flight of the day on this route.

A Yara se le encogió el estómago. Tenía una reunión a la mañana siguiente a la que no podía faltar. Este era su único vuelo del día en esa ruta.

The line at the counter grew quickly. Yara found herself standing behind a woman who looked just as worried as she felt. "Cancelled too?" the woman asked, glancing at Yara's boarding pass.

La fila en el mostrador crecía rápido. Yara se encontró parada detrás de una mujer que se veía tan preocupada como ella se sentía. «¿A ti también te lo cancelaron?», preguntó la mujer, mirando de reojo el pase de abordar de Yara.

"Yes," Yara said. "I have a meeting tomorrow morning. I really can't be late."

"Same here," the woman said. "I'm Leah, by the way. Have you checked for other flights already?"

«Igual yo», dijo la mujer. «Por cierto, soy Leah. ¿Ya revisaste si hay otros vuelos?».

Yara hadn't thought of that yet. She opened an app on her phone while they waited in line. She searched for flights leaving that evening from any nearby airport.

Yara todavía no había pensado en eso. Abrió una aplicación en su celular mientras esperaban en la fila. Buscó vuelos que salieran esa noche desde cualquier aeropuerto cercano.

"There's one from the smaller airport across town," Yara said, "but it leaves in ninety minutes."

«Hay uno desde el aeropuerto más pequeño, del otro lado de la ciudad», dijo Yara, «pero sale en noventa minutos».

"If we share a taxi, we might actually make it," Leah said. "It's worth trying, at least."

«Si compartimos un taxi, tal vez sí lleguemos», dijo Leah. «Al menos vale la pena intentarlo».

They left the line together and hailed a taxi outside. The driver, sensing their urgency, took a route through side streets to avoid the worst of the traffic.

Dejaron la fila juntas y pararon un taxi afuera. El conductor, sintiendo su urgencia, tomó una ruta por calles laterales para evitar lo peor del tráfico.

They reached the smaller airport with twenty minutes to spare, breathless but relieved. At the counter, they discovered two seats were still available on the flight.

Llegaron al aeropuerto más pequeño con veinte minutos de sobra, sin aliento pero aliviadas. En el mostrador, descubrieron que todavía quedaban dos asientos disponibles en el vuelo.

"I can't believe that actually worked," Yara said, laughing as she handed over her passport.

«No puedo creer que en verdad funcionó», dijo Yara, riéndose mientras entregaba su pasaporte.

"Desperate plans sometimes do," Leah said, grinning.

«Los planes desesperados a veces funcionan», dijo Leah, sonriendo.

They boarded the plane together and, by coincidence, found their seats were only a few rows apart. As the plane lifted off, Yara pulled out her notes for the next day's meeting. She finally let herself relax.

Abordaron el avión juntas y, por casualidad, descubrieron que sus asientos quedaban a solo unas filas de distancia. Cuando el avión despegó, Yara sacó sus notas para la reunión del día siguiente. Por fin se permitió relajarse.
