The Cancelled Flight

Yara arrived at the airport two hours early, exactly as she always did. She had a connecting flight to catch in another city. She liked having plenty of time to spare.

यारा हवाई अड्डे पर दो घंटे पहले पहुँच गई, बिल्कुल वैसे ही जैसे वह हमेशा करती थी। उसे दूसरे शहर में कनेक्टिंग फ़्लाइट पकड़नी थी। उसे हाथ में काफ़ी समय रखना पसंद था।

She had just settled into a seat near her gate when an announcement crackled overhead. Her flight had been cancelled due to a mechanical issue. Passengers were asked to speak with an agent at the counter.

वह अभी अपने गेट के पास एक सीट पर बैठी ही थी कि ऊपर से घोषणा गूँजी। उसकी फ़्लाइट तकनीकी खराबी की वजह से रद्द हो गई थी। यात्रियों से कहा गया कि वे काउंटर पर एजेंट से बात करें।

Yara's stomach tightened. She had a meeting the next morning that she couldn't miss. This was her only flight of the day on this route.

यारा का पेट सिकुड़ गया। अगली सुबह उसकी एक मीटिंग थी जिसे वह छोड़ नहीं सकती थी। इस रूट पर उस दिन की यही उसकी इकलौती फ़्लाइट थी।

The line at the counter grew quickly. Yara found herself standing behind a woman who looked just as worried as she felt. "Cancelled too?" the woman asked, glancing at Yara's boarding pass.

काउंटर पर लाइन तेज़ी से लंबी होती गई। यारा खुद को एक ऐसी महिला के पीछे खड़ा पाती है जो उतनी ही परेशान दिख रही थी जितनी वह महसूस कर रही थी। "आपकी भी रद्द हो गई?" महिला ने यारा के बोर्डिंग पास की ओर देखते हुए पूछा।

"Yes," Yara said. "I have a meeting tomorrow morning. I really can't be late."

"हाँ," यारा ने कहा। "कल सुबह मेरी मीटिंग है। मैं सचमुच देर से नहीं पहुँच सकती।"

"Same here," the woman said. "I'm Leah, by the way. Have you checked for other flights already?"

"मेरे साथ भी यही है," महिला ने कहा। "वैसे मैं लिया हूँ। क्या आपने पहले ही दूसरी फ़्लाइटें देख ली हैं?"

Yara hadn't thought of that yet. She opened an app on her phone while they waited in line. She searched for flights leaving that evening from any nearby airport.

यारा ने अब तक यह सोचा ही नहीं था। लाइन में इंतज़ार करते हुए उसने अपने फ़ोन पर एक ऐप खोला। उसने आसपास के किसी भी हवाई अड्डे से उस शाम उड़ने वाली फ़्लाइटें खोजीं।

"There's one from the smaller airport across town," Yara said, "but it leaves in ninety minutes."

"शहर के दूसरी ओर वाले छोटे हवाई अड्डे से एक है," यारा ने कहा, "पर वह नब्बे मिनट में निकल जाएगी।"

"If we share a taxi, we might actually make it," Leah said. "It's worth trying, at least."

"अगर हम टैक्सी बाँट लें तो शायद हम पहुँच जाएँ," लिया ने कहा। "कम से कम कोशिश करना तो बनता है।"

They left the line together and hailed a taxi outside. The driver, sensing their urgency, took a route through side streets to avoid the worst of the traffic.

वे साथ-साथ लाइन से निकले और बाहर एक टैक्सी रोकी। ड्राइवर ने उनकी जल्दी भाँप ली और सबसे बुरे ट्रैफ़िक से बचने के लिए गलियों वाले रास्ते से ले गया।

They reached the smaller airport with twenty minutes to spare, breathless but relieved. At the counter, they discovered two seats were still available on the flight.

वे बीस मिनट बचाकर छोटे हवाई अड्डे पहुँच गईं, हाँफती हुई पर राहत में। काउंटर पर उन्हें पता चला कि फ़्लाइट में अब भी दो सीटें खाली थीं।

"I can't believe that actually worked," Yara said, laughing as she handed over her passport.

"यकीन नहीं होता कि यह सच में चल गया," यारा ने हँसते हुए अपना पासपोर्ट थमाते हुए कहा।

"Desperate plans sometimes do," Leah said, grinning.

"हताशा वाली योजनाएँ कभी-कभी चल जाती हैं," लिया ने मुस्कुराते हुए कहा।

They boarded the plane together and, by coincidence, found their seats were only a few rows apart. As the plane lifted off, Yara pulled out her notes for the next day's meeting. She finally let herself relax.

वे साथ-साथ विमान में चढ़ीं और संयोग से उनकी सीटें बस कुछ कतारों के फ़ासले पर निकलीं। विमान ने उड़ान भरी तो यारा ने अगले दिन की मीटिंग के नोट्स निकाल लिए। आखिरकार उसने खुद को सुकून से बैठने दिया।
