The Tide Came In

Lucia and Idris had walked out to the tide pools on the far side of the beach. They were chasing crabs and photographing anemones with Lucia's phone. They'd checked the tide schedule that morning. But somewhere between exploring one pool and then another, they'd lost track of time completely.

लूसिया और इदरीस समुद्र तट के दूर वाले किनारे पर ज्वार के कुंडों तक चलकर गए थे। वे केकड़ों के पीछे दौड़ रहे थे और लूसिया के फ़ोन से एनीमोन की तस्वीरें खींच रहे थे। उन्होंने सुबह ज्वार का समय-सारणी देख ली थी। लेकिन एक कुंड को देखने और फिर दूसरे में जाने के बीच कहीं वे समय का हिसाब पूरी तरह भूल गए थे।

It was Idris who noticed first. "Hey, doesn't the water look closer than before?"

सबसे पहले इदरीस ने ध्यान दिया। "अरे, क्या पानी पहले से ज़्यादा पास नहीं लग रहा?"

Lucia looked up from her phone and realized he was right. The narrow strip of sand that had brought them out to the rocks was now noticeably thinner. Small waves were already lapping at its edges. Panic crept into her voice. "We need to go, now."

लूसिया ने फ़ोन से नज़र उठाई और समझ गई कि वह सही है। रेत की जिस पतली पट्टी से वे चट्टानों तक आए थे, वह अब साफ़ तौर पर और पतली हो चुकी थी। छोटी लहरें उसके किनारों को छूने लगी थीं। उसकी आवाज़ में घबराहट आ गई। "हमें अभी चलना चाहिए।"

They started back the way they'd come, moving quickly across the wet rocks. But halfway along, a wave rushed in and covered the path completely. It left only deeper water between them and the beach.

वे जिस रास्ते से आए थे, उसी से तेज़ी से गीली चट्टानों पर वापस चलने लगे। लेकिन आधे रास्ते में एक लहर दौड़ती हुई आई और पूरे रास्ते को ढक गई। उनके और समुद्र तट के बीच अब सिर्फ़ गहरा पानी बचा था।

"We can't swim through that, not with the current this strong," Idris said. He scanned the rocks around them for another option.

"इतनी तेज़ धारा में हम तैरकर नहीं जा सकते," इदरीस ने कहा। उसने आसपास की चट्टानों में कोई दूसरा रास्ता ढूँढा।

Lucia spotted a higher line of boulders curving away from the water. It was further inland but still connected to dry land. "There, up on those rocks. It looks longer, but it should stay dry."

लूसिया को बड़े पत्थरों की एक ऊँची क़तार दिखी जो पानी से दूर मुड़ती जा रही थी। वह थोड़ा और अंदर की ओर थी, पर फिर भी सूखी ज़मीन से जुड़ी हुई थी। "वहाँ, उन चट्टानों के ऊपर। यह लंबा दिखता है, पर सूखा रहना चाहिए।"

They scrambled up onto the boulders, gripping the rough stone with both hands. The tide continued rising below them. The path was slower and harder than the direct route. But it kept them safely above the water the whole way.

वे दोनों हाथों से खुरदरे पत्थर को पकड़ते हुए बड़े पत्थरों पर चढ़ गए। नीचे ज्वार चढ़ता रहा। यह रास्ता सीधे रास्ते से धीमा और मुश्किल था। लेकिन इसने उन्हें पूरे समय पानी से सुरक्षित ऊपर रखा।

By the time they reached solid sand again, both of them were breathing hard. Lucia's phone had slipped from her pocket somewhere along the rocks.

जब तक वे फिर ठोस रेत पर पहुँचे, दोनों की साँसें फूली हुई थीं। लूसिया का फ़ोन चट्टानों के बीच कहीं उसकी जेब से फिसल गया था।

"Small price to pay," she said, laughing with relief now that they were safe.

"यह तो छोटी-सी क़ीमत है," उसने कहा, अब सुरक्षित होने की राहत में हँसते हुए।

"Next time," Idris added, "we're setting an alarm for the tide."

"अगली बार," इदरीस ने जोड़ा, "हम ज्वार के लिए अलार्म लगाएँगे।"
