The Tide Came In

Lucia and Idris had walked out to the tide pools on the far side of the beach. They were chasing crabs and photographing anemones with Lucia's phone. They'd checked the tide schedule that morning. But somewhere between exploring one pool and then another, they'd lost track of time completely.

Lucia e Idris habían caminado hasta las pozas de marea al otro lado de la playa. Perseguían cangrejos y fotografiaban anémonas con el teléfono de Lucia. Esa mañana habían revisado el horario de las mareas. Pero entre explorar una poza y luego otra, perdieron por completo la noción del tiempo.

It was Idris who noticed first. "Hey, doesn't the water look closer than before?"

Fue Idris quien lo notó primero. «Oye, ¿no ves el agua más cerca que antes?».

Lucia looked up from her phone and realized he was right. The narrow strip of sand that had brought them out to the rocks was now noticeably thinner. Small waves were already lapping at its edges. Panic crept into her voice. "We need to go, now."

Lucia levantó la vista de su teléfono y se dio cuenta de que él tenía razón. La estrecha franja de arena que los había llevado hasta las rocas ahora era notablemente más delgada. Pequeñas olas ya lamían sus bordes. El pánico se filtró en su voz. «Tenemos que irnos, ahora».

They started back the way they'd come, moving quickly across the wet rocks. But halfway along, a wave rushed in and covered the path completely. It left only deeper water between them and the beach.

Emprendieron el regreso por donde habían venido, moviéndose rápido sobre las rocas mojadas. Pero a mitad de camino, una ola llegó de golpe y cubrió el sendero por completo. Solo dejó agua más profunda entre ellos y la playa.

"We can't swim through that, not with the current this strong," Idris said. He scanned the rocks around them for another option.

«No podemos cruzar eso a nado, no con la corriente tan fuerte», dijo Idris. Recorrió con la mirada las rocas a su alrededor buscando otra opción.

Lucia spotted a higher line of boulders curving away from the water. It was further inland but still connected to dry land. "There, up on those rocks. It looks longer, but it should stay dry."

Lucia divisó una línea de rocas más altas que se alejaba curvándose del agua. Quedaba más tierra adentro, pero seguía conectada con tierra seca. «Ahí, arriba en esas rocas. Se ve más largo, pero debería mantenerse seco».

They scrambled up onto the boulders, gripping the rough stone with both hands. The tide continued rising below them. The path was slower and harder than the direct route. But it kept them safely above the water the whole way.

Se subieron trepando a las rocas, agarrándose de la piedra áspera con ambas manos. La marea seguía subiendo debajo de ellos. El camino era más lento y más difícil que la ruta directa. Pero los mantuvo a salvo por encima del agua todo el trayecto.

By the time they reached solid sand again, both of them were breathing hard. Lucia's phone had slipped from her pocket somewhere along the rocks.

Para cuando volvieron a pisar arena firme, ambos respiraban con dificultad. El teléfono de Lucia se le había caído del bolsillo en algún punto entre las rocas.

"Small price to pay," she said, laughing with relief now that they were safe.

«Un precio pequeño que pagar», dijo ella, riendo de alivio ahora que estaban a salvo.

"Next time," Idris added, "we're setting an alarm for the tide."

«La próxima vez», añadió Idris, «vamos a poner una alarma para la marea».
