The Ring in the Sand

The beach is cold and nearly empty. Gaspar walks along the water with his hands in his pockets. The wind is strong.

समुद्र तट ठंडा है और लगभग ख़ाली। गैस्पर अपने हाथ जेबों में डाले पानी के किनारे-किनारे चल रहा है। हवा तेज़ है।

He takes one hand out to pick up a shell. The ring slips off his cold finger and drops into the sand. He cannot see it anywhere.

वह एक सीपी उठाने के लिए एक हाथ बाहर निकालता है। अँगूठी उसकी ठंडी उँगली से फिसलकर रेत में गिर जाती है। वह उसे कहीं नहीं देख पाता।

Gaspar kneels and pushes the sand with his hands. It is a plain silver ring from his wife. He looks for an hour. His knees are wet, and his fingers are red. He finds nothing.

गैस्पर घुटनों के बल बैठकर हाथों से रेत टटोलता है। यह उसकी पत्नी की दी हुई एक सादी चाँदी की अँगूठी है। वह एक घंटे तक ढूँढता है। उसके घुटने गीले हो गए हैं और उँगलियाँ लाल पड़ गई हैं। उसे कुछ नहीं मिलता।

A man with a long metal tool walks over. "Did you lose something?" he asks.

हाथ में लंबा धातु का औज़ार लिए एक आदमी उसके पास आता है। "क्या कुछ खो गया है?" वह पूछता है।

"My ring," says Gaspar. "I cannot find it."

"मेरी अँगूठी," गैस्पर कहता है। "वह मुझे मिल नहीं रही।"

"I have a machine for that," the man says. "My name is Rufus. Show me where you walked."

"इसके लिए मेरे पास एक मशीन है," आदमी कहता है। "मेरा नाम रूफ़स है। मुझे दिखाइए कि आप कहाँ-कहाँ चले थे।"

Gaspar shows him the place. Rufus moves the machine slowly over the sand. It beeps. They dig with their hands. It is a bottle cap.

गैस्पर उसे वह जगह दिखाता है। रूफ़स मशीन को रेत के ऊपर धीरे-धीरे घुमाता है। वह बीप करती है। वे हाथों से खोदते हैं। वह एक बोतल का ढक्कन निकलता है।

The machine beeps again. This time they find a coin. Then they find another bottle cap. Then they find an old coin with a hole.

मशीन फिर बीप करती है। इस बार उन्हें एक सिक्का मिलता है। फिर एक और बोतल का ढक्कन। फिर छेद वाला एक पुराना सिक्का।

Rufus laughs. "This beach is full of treasure," he says. "Everyone loses something here."

रूफ़स हँसता है। "यह समुद्र तट ख़ज़ाने से भरा है," वह कहता है। "यहाँ हर कोई कुछ न कुछ खोता है।"

Gaspar sits back on the sand. He thinks the ring is gone.

गैस्पर रेत पर पीछे की तरफ़ बैठ जाता है। उसे लगता है कि अँगूठी चली गई।

Then the machine gives a long, loud beep. Rufus stops. "This one is different," he says.

तभी मशीन एक लंबी, तेज़ बीप देती है। रूफ़स रुक जाता है। "यह अलग है," वह कहता है।

Gaspar digs in the wet sand. Something small shines in his fingers. It is the ring.

गैस्पर गीली रेत में खोदता है। उसकी उँगलियों में कुछ छोटा-सा चमकता है। यह वही अँगूठी है।

"Next time," says Rufus, "keep it in a warm pocket."

"अगली बार," रूफ़स कहता है, "इसे किसी गरम जेब में रखिएगा।"

Gaspar pushes the ring back on his finger and closes his hand.

गैस्पर अँगूठी को वापस अपनी उँगली में पहन लेता है और अपनी मुट्ठी बंद कर लेता है।
