Stellan's family has a gray parrot named Peanut. Peanut lives in a big cage in the living room. He repeats anything he hears.
स्टेलन के परिवार में पीनट नाम का एक स्लेटी तोता है। पीनट बैठक में एक बड़े पिंजरे में रहता है। वह जो कुछ भी सुनता है, उसे दोहरा देता है।
One evening, Stellan's older sister Lila drops a plate in the kitchen. "Oh, great," she says loudly, in a flat, annoyed voice.
एक शाम स्टेलन की बड़ी बहन लिला रसोई में एक प्लेट गिरा देती है। "वाह, बहुत बढ़िया," वह ज़ोर से कहती है, सपाट और चिढ़ी हुई आवाज़ में।
Peanut listens closely from his cage. He tilts his head to one side.

The next morning, Peanut says it too. "Oh, great," he says, in the exact same flat voice. He says it again and again, all day long.

"Peanut, please stop," Stellan says, laughing a little.

By the weekend, Peanut says the phrase often. When his food bowl is empty, he says it. When the door closes too loudly, he says it too.
हफ़्ते के अंत तक पीनट यह वाक्य अक्सर बोलने लगता है। जब उसका दाने का कटोरा ख़ाली होता है, तब वह इसे बोलता है। जब दरवाज़ा बहुत ज़ोर से बंद होता है, तब भी वह यही बोलता है।
"This is a problem," Lila says. "Grandma visits tomorrow, and she hates that phrase."

Stellan looks at Peanut and thinks for a minute. "We need to teach him something new," he says. "Something he'll want to say more."

They spend the evening near the cage. When Peanut stays quiet, they give him a piece of apple. When he says a new word, they say kind words to him.

"Good bird!" Stellan says again and again, in a happy, bright voice.

By bedtime, Peanut starts to copy the new phrase instead. "Good bird! Good bird!" he squawks proudly from his perch.
सोने के समय तक पीनट इसके बजाय नया वाक्य दोहराने लगता है। "शाबाश, पंछी! शाबाश, पंछी!" वह अपनी डंडी पर बैठा गर्व से चिल्लाता है।
The next day, Grandma arrives and walks straight to the cage.
अगले दिन दादी आती हैं और सीधे पिंजरे के पास चली जाती हैं।
"Good bird!" Peanut announces. Grandma laughs and claps her hands.
"शाबाश, पंछी!" पीनट ऐलान करता है। दादी हँस पड़ती हैं और ताली बजाती हैं।
