The Idea in the Meeting

On Monday morning, Javier sat in the meeting room with a coffee he did not drink. At the front, his coworker Tamar was presenting a plan for the new customer app. On slide three, there was a feature he knew well. It was a small reminder that appeared when a customer left something in the basket.

सोमवार की सुबह हावियर मीटिंग रूम में एक कॉफ़ी लिए बैठा था जिसे उसने पिया नहीं था। सामने उसकी सहकर्मी तामार नए ग्राहक ऐप की योजना पेश कर रही थी। तीसरी स्लाइड पर एक ऐसी सुविधा थी जिसे वह अच्छी तरह जानता था। वह एक छोटा-सा रिमाइंडर था जो तब दिखता था जब कोई ग्राहक अपनी टोकरी में कुछ छोड़ जाता था।

It was his idea. He had suggested it two weeks earlier, in the hallway, and had written it in a long email. Now Tamar was explaining it with a confident smile, and the manager was nodding and taking notes.

यह उसका अपना विचार था। उसने दो हफ़्ते पहले गलियारे में इसका सुझाव दिया था और एक लंबे ईमेल में भी लिखा था। अब तामार आत्मविश्वास भरी मुस्कान के साथ उसे समझा रही थी, और प्रबंधक सिर हिलाकर नोट्स ले रहा था।

"That's the best part of the project," the manager said. "Well done, Tamar."

"यह इस प्रोजेक्ट का सबसे अच्छा हिस्सा है," प्रबंधक ने कहा। "शाबाश, तामार।"

Javier's face grew hot. He stared at the table and gripped his pen. For the rest of the meeting, he heard almost nothing. He was composing the message he would send to the manager that afternoon, a clear and serious one. He might even copy the whole team.

हावियर का चेहरा गरम हो गया। वह मेज़ को घूरता रहा और उसने अपनी कलम कसकर पकड़ ली। मीटिंग के बाक़ी समय उसे लगभग कुछ सुनाई नहीं दिया। वह मन ही मन वह संदेश तैयार कर रहा था जो वह उसी दोपहर प्रबंधक को भेजेगा, साफ़ और गंभीर। शायद वह पूरी टीम को भी कॉपी में रख दे।

At lunch, however, he made himself walk to the kitchen and eat slowly. A friend had once said that angry emails feel better to write than to send. He decided to speak to Tamar first, in private, before he did anything he might regret.

लेकिन दोपहर के खाने में उसने ख़ुद को रसोई तक जाने और धीरे-धीरे खाने के लिए मजबूर किया। एक दोस्त ने कभी कहा था कि ग़ुस्से वाले ईमेल लिखने में अच्छे लगते हैं, भेजने में नहीं। उसने तय किया कि कुछ भी ऐसा करने से पहले जिस पर बाद में पछताना पड़े, वह तामार से अकेले में बात करेगा।

He found her at her desk after lunch. "Do you have a minute? It's about the reminder idea on slide three."

खाने के बाद वह उसे अपनी मेज़ पर मिली। "क्या आपके पास एक मिनट है? तीसरी स्लाइड वाले रिमाइंडर के विचार के बारे में बात करनी है।"

"Of course," she said. Then her expression changed. "Oh. Did I do something wrong?"

"ज़रूर," उसने कहा। फिर उसके चेहरे के भाव बदल गए। "अरे। क्या मुझसे कोई ग़लती हो गई?"

"I proposed that feature to you two weeks ago," he said, trying to keep his voice calm. "It felt strange to hear it presented as new."

"यह सुविधा मैंने आपको दो हफ़्ते पहले सुझाई थी," उसने आवाज़ को शांत रखने की कोशिश करते हुए कहा। "इसे नए विचार की तरह पेश होते सुनना अजीब लगा।"

Tamar put her hand over her mouth. "Javier, I'm so sorry. I really thought it came from the group brainstorm last month. Several of us were throwing out ideas, and I didn't remember who said what. I wrote it in my notes under team ideas."

तामार ने अपने मुँह पर हाथ रख लिया। "हावियर, मुझे बहुत अफ़सोस है। मुझे सच में लगा था कि यह पिछले महीने के ग्रुप ब्रेनस्टॉर्म से आया था। हममें से कई लोग विचार बोल रहे थे, और मुझे याद नहीं रहा कि किसने क्या कहा। मैंने इसे अपने नोट्स में टीम के विचारों के नीचे लिख लिया था।"

"I didn't say it in the brainstorm. I sent you an email."

"मैंने यह ब्रेनस्टॉर्म में नहीं कहा था। मैंने आपको ईमेल भेजा था।"

She opened her laptop, scrolled for a moment, and went quiet. "I found it. You're right. I forgot about it completely. I should have checked before the meeting."

उसने अपना लैपटॉप खोला, कुछ देर स्क्रॉल किया और चुप हो गई। "मिल गया। आप सही हैं। मैं इसे बिल्कुल भूल गई थी। मुझे मीटिंग से पहले जाँच लेना चाहिए था।"

"Thanks for looking," he said. His anger had mostly gone.

"देखने के लिए शुक्रिया," उसने कहा। उसका ग़ुस्सा अब ज़्यादातर जा चुका था।

"Let me fix it. Would you like to present the next part with me on Thursday? You know the idea better than I do."

"मुझे इसे ठीक करने दीजिए। क्या आप गुरुवार को अगला हिस्सा मेरे साथ पेश करना चाहेंगे? आप इस विचार को मुझसे बेहतर जानते हैं।"

Javier nodded and picked up his notebook. "Let's start now, then. I have a few more thoughts."

हावियर ने सिर हिलाया और अपनी नोटबुक उठा ली। "तो चलिए अभी शुरू करते हैं। मेरे पास कुछ और विचार हैं।"
