The Team Captain's Decision

Devika has been team captain of the school volleyball team for exactly two months. She still isn't sure she deserves the title.

देविका को स्कूल की वॉलीबॉल टीम की कैप्टन बने ठीक दो महीने हुए हैं। उसे अब भी पक्का नहीं लगता कि वह इस पद के लायक है।

During practice on Tuesday, she notices something that has been bothering her for weeks. The coach keeps giving Farah, the newest player, almost no playing time. That's true even though Farah has improved more than anyone else on the team this season.

मंगलवार की प्रैक्टिस के दौरान उसे एक ऐसी बात दिखती है जो हफ़्तों से उसे परेशान कर रही है। कोच सबसे नई खिलाड़ी फ़राह को लगभग खेलने का मौका ही नहीं देते। जबकि इस सीज़न में फ़राह ने टीम में सबसे ज़्यादा सुधार किया है।

"She's still learning the rotations," the coach says, when Devika asks about it quietly after practice. "I don't want to risk a mistake during a real match."

"वह अभी रोटेशन सीख रही है," प्रैक्टिस के बाद देविका के धीरे से पूछने पर कोच कहते हैं। "मैं असली मैच में कोई गलती का जोखिम नहीं लेना चाहता।"

Devika understands the logic, but it doesn't sit right with her. Farah has stayed late every single practice, asking for extra drills nobody else wants to do. If effort like that doesn't earn a chance to play, Devika isn't sure what does.

देविका उनकी बात का तर्क समझती है, पर यह उसे ठीक नहीं लगता। फ़राह हर प्रैक्टिस में देर तक रुकती है और ऐसी एक्स्ट्रा ड्रिल माँगती है जो कोई और नहीं करना चाहता। अगर इतनी मेहनत से भी खेलने का मौका नहीं मिलता, तो देविका को समझ नहीं आता कि फिर किससे मिलेगा।

She spends that night going back and forth. Saying something could make her look like she's questioning the coach in front of the team. Saying nothing means watching a teammate work harder than anyone and still get overlooked.

वह पूरी रात इसी उलझन में रहती है। कुछ कहने पर ऐसा लग सकता है कि वह टीम के सामने कोच पर सवाल उठा रही है। कुछ न कहने का मतलब है एक साथी को सबसे ज़्यादा मेहनत करते हुए भी नज़रअंदाज़ होते देखना।

The next day, Devika catches the coach before practice starts. "Can I ask you something? About Farah."

अगले दिन देविका प्रैक्टिस शुरू होने से पहले कोच को पकड़ लेती है। "क्या मैं आपसे कुछ पूछ सकती हूँ? फ़राह के बारे में।"

The coach sighs, clearly expecting this. "Go ahead."

कोच आह भरते हैं, जैसे उन्हें इसी की उम्मीद थी। "पूछो।"

"I know it's your call," Devika says, "but I think she's ready for more minutes. She's the first one here and the last one to leave, every single practice. If we don't give her a real chance, I don't think that's fair to her."

"मैं जानती हूँ कि यह आपका फ़ैसला है," देविका कहती है, "पर मुझे लगता है वह और ज़्यादा खेलने के लिए तैयार है। वह हर प्रैक्टिस में सबसे पहले आती है और सबसे आख़िर में जाती है। अगर हम उसे सचमुच मौका नहीं देंगे, तो मुझे नहीं लगता कि यह उसके साथ इंसाफ़ है।"

The coach is quiet for a moment. "You really believe she's ready?"

कोच कुछ देर चुप रहते हैं। "तुम्हें सच में लगता है कि वह तैयार है?"

"I do. And even if she makes a mistake, that's how she'll actually learn the rotations you're worried about."

"जी हाँ। और अगर वह कोई गलती करती भी है, तो असल में उसी से वह वे रोटेशन सीखेगी जिनकी आपको चिंता है।"

He nods slowly. "Alright. She starts the next set today. We'll see how it goes."

वे धीरे से सिर हिलाते हैं। "ठीक है। आज अगले सेट से वह खेलेगी। देखते हैं क्या होता है।"

During the match, Farah is nervous at first, missing an easy serve in the opening minutes. But she settles in quickly. By the third set, she's set up two of the team's best points.

मैच में फ़राह शुरुआत में घबराई हुई है और पहले ही मिनटों में एक आसान सर्व चूक जाती है। पर वह जल्दी ही संभल जाती है। तीसरे सेट तक वह टीम के दो सबसे अच्छे पॉइंट बनवा चुकी होती है।

Afterward, Farah finds Devika by the water fountain. "Did you say something to Coach?"

बाद में फ़राह वॉटर फ़ाउंटेन के पास देविका को ढूँढ लेती है। "क्या तुमने कोच से कुछ कहा था?"

Devika shrugs, trying to sound casual. "I just mentioned you'd earned it."

देविका लापरवाही से कंधे उचका देती है। "मैंने बस इतना कहा था कि तुमने इसे कमाया है।"

Farah doesn't say anything for a second. Then she grins. "Well, don't stop mentioning things."

फ़राह एक पल कुछ नहीं बोलती। फिर वह मुस्कुरा देती है। "तो फिर ऐसी बातें कहती रहना।"
