The Sugar in the Soup

On Thursday evening, Sol went to a cooking class. She did not know anyone. The teacher gave her a partner.

El jueves por la tarde, Sol fue a una clase de cocina. No conocía a nadie. La maestra le asignó un compañero.

The partner was a tall man named Ivo. "Hello," he said. "Let's make soup."

El compañero era un hombre alto llamado Ivo. «Hola», dijo. «Hagamos sopa.»

Sol cut the onions and the carrots. Ivo put water in the pot. They worked well together.

Sol cortó las cebollas y las zanahorias. Ivo puso agua en la olla. Trabajaron bien juntos.

The teacher said, "Now add one spoon of salt." Sol took a white jar from the table. She put in one spoon. She did not look at the jar.

Ivo tasted the soup. His face changed. "Is it good?" Sol asked. "Taste it," he said.

Sol tasted it. The soup was sweet! It tasted like a cake with carrots.

Sol la probó. ¡La sopa estaba dulce! Sabía a pastel con zanahorias.

She looked at the jar. The word on it was sugar. "Oh no!" she said. Ivo laughed, and Sol laughed too.

Miró el frasco. La palabra que tenía era azúcar. «¡Ay, no!», dijo. Ivo se rió, y Sol también.

Other people looked at them. The teacher smiled. "Start again," she said.

Otras personas los miraron. La maestra sonrió. «Empiecen de nuevo», dijo.

This time, Sol read every jar. Ivo cut new onions. The new soup was very good.

Esta vez, Sol leyó cada frasco. Ivo cortó cebollas nuevas. La sopa nueva estaba muy buena.

After class, Ivo held his empty bowl. "Do you want to get coffee next week?" he asked.

"Yes," Sol said. "But you make the coffee."
