The Squall Off the Point

Ines had watched the sky darken over the point for the last twenty minutes, telling herself it was probably just a passing shower. By the time the wind shifted hard from the north, she knew she had waited too long to decide.

Ines había observado cómo el cielo se oscurecía sobre la punta durante los últimos veinte minutos, diciéndose que probablemente era solo un chubasco pasajero. Para cuando el viento cambió bruscamente desde el norte, supo que había esperado demasiado para decidir.

"Reef the main, now!" she called to Rhys, already moving toward the halyard herself. The boat heeled sharply as the first gust hit, spray coming clean over the bow.

«¡Riza la vela mayor, ahora!», le gritó a Rhys, mientras ella misma ya se dirigía hacia la driza. El barco se inclinó con fuerza cuando llegó la primera racha, y el agua salpicó por encima de la proa.

Rhys scrambled to the mast, fighting the flapping sail as rain began hammering the deck sideways. "How far out are we from the harbor?"

Rhys corrió hacia el mástil, luchando contra la vela que se agitaba mientras la lluvia empezaba a golpear la cubierta de lado. «¿A qué distancia estamos del puerto?».

"Four miles, but we're not running for it in this," Ines said, judging the whitecaps building around them. "If we turned downwind now, we'd be overpowered before we got halfway there."

«Cuatro millas, pero no vamos a intentarlo con esto», dijo Ines, calculando las olas blancas que se formaban a su alrededor. «Si viráramos a favor del viento ahora, nos superaría antes de llegar a la mitad del camino».

Once the reef was set, the boat steadied slightly, though it still pitched hard against the swell. Ines held the tiller with both hands, watching the compass rather than the horizon, which had disappeared into gray.

Una vez rizada la vela, el barco se estabilizó un poco, aunque seguía cabeceando con fuerza contra el oleaje. Ines sostenía la caña del timón con ambas manos, mirando la brújula en lugar del horizonte, que había desaparecido entre el gris.

"There's a cove just east of the point," she shouted over the wind. "Sheltered, if we can reach it before this gets worse."

Rhys nodded, bracing himself against the cockpit rail as another wave broke over the side. "You've sailed in here before?"

"Once, years ago. I remember the entrance is narrow, but it's deep enough."

«Una vez, hace años. Recuerdo que la entrada es angosta, pero tiene suficiente profundidad».

They tacked twice against the wind, the boat groaning with each turn. At last the cliffs of the cove rose ahead of them, cutting the worst of the wind. The water inside calmed almost immediately, the roar behind them fading to something more distant.

Viraron dos veces contra el viento, con el barco gimiendo en cada giro. Por fin, los acantilados de la cala se alzaron ante ellos, cortando lo peor del viento. El agua dentro se calmó casi de inmediato, y el rugido detrás de ellos se fue quedando más distante.

Ines dropped anchor with hands that were only now beginning to shake. "That was closer than I'd have liked."

Ines echó el ancla con las manos que apenas ahora empezaban a temblar. «Eso estuvo más cerca de lo que me habría gustado».

"You read that squall better than I would have," Rhys said, wringing out his soaked jacket. "I'd have tried to outrun it."

«Leíste esa tormenta mejor de lo que yo lo habría hecho», dijo Rhys, escurriendo su chaqueta empapada. «Yo habría intentado escapar de ella».

"Running would've been faster, if it had worked," Ines admitted. "It's the 'if' I wasn't willing to bet on."

«Huir habría sido más rápido, si hubiera funcionado», admitió Ines. «Es ese "si" lo que no estaba dispuesta a apostar».

They sat in the sheltered water until the worst of the storm passed overhead, watching the point they'd nearly rounded disappear behind curtains of rain.

Se quedaron en el agua protegida hasta que lo peor de la tormenta pasó por encima, observando cómo la punta que casi habían rodeado desaparecía detrás de cortinas de lluvia.
