Lost Past the Marker Trail

Amara had been told a hundred times to stay behind the group leader, and for most of the hike she had. Then the trail forked around a fallen tree, and somehow she took the branch that curved left instead of right.

By the time she realized nobody was answering her calls, the light through the canopy had turned a deep orange. She had maybe an hour before it got properly dark.

She sat down on a rock, forcing herself to think instead of panic. Her instructor had said it once, back at the trailhead: if you're lost, stop moving. Every step in the wrong direction makes the search harder.

Amara pulled out her whistle and blew three short blasts, waited, then blew three more. She remembered Tomas mentioning that three blasts meant distress, though she had never expected to be the one using them.

Amara sacó su silbato y sopló tres veces seguidas y cortas, esperó, y luego sopló tres veces más. Recordó que Tomás había mencionado que tres pitidos significaban emergencia, aunque nunca había imaginado que sería ella quien los usara.

Back on the marked trail, Tomas had noticed her missing almost immediately.

"She was right behind me at the fallen tree," he told the group leader. "If she'd taken the left fork by mistake, she'd be heading toward the ravine."

The group split, with half continuing on the main trail and half backtracking toward the fork. Tomas went with the second group, since he knew the wrong turn better than anyone.

El grupo se dividió: la mitad siguió por el sendero principal y la otra mitad regresó hacia la bifurcación. Tomás fue con el segundo grupo, ya que él conocía el camino equivocado mejor que nadie.

They heard the whistle before they saw her — three blasts, faint but steady, carried downhill on the wind.

Oyeron el silbato antes de verla: tres pitidos, débiles pero constantes, que el viento llevaba cuesta abajo.

"Over here! I'm over here!" Amara shouted once she heard voices answering.

«¡Aquí! ¡Estoy aquí!», gritó Amara al oír voces que respondían.

Tomas reached her first, out of breath from jogging the last stretch. "You had us worried. Are you hurt?"

Tomás llegó primero hasta ella, sin aliento por haber trotado el último tramo. «Nos tenías preocupados. ¿Estás herida?»

"Just tired, and a little embarrassed," she admitted. "I should've noticed the trail markers had stopped."

«Solo cansada, y un poco avergonzada», admitió ella. «Debí haber notado que las marcas del sendero se habían acabado».

"You did everything else right, though," Tomas said. "You stayed put and you used the whistle. That's honestly the hard part."

«Pero hiciste todo lo demás bien», dijo Tomás. «Te quedaste quieta y usaste el silbato. Eso, honestamente, es la parte difícil».

They walked back together, Amara between Tomas and the returning leader. The whistle still hung from her hand, something she wasn't quite ready to let go of.
