Every message Freya sends to her friend group shows as "seen" by Diego within seconds. This happens even at two in the morning, even when he later swears he was asleep the whole time. At first, the others in the chat find it funny, teasing him about secretly being awake all night. Diego insists, a little defensively, that he genuinely isn't.
The joke starts to feel less like a joke after a week of it happening every single night, without exception. One friend suggests, half-serious, that maybe someone else has access to his phone. Diego says that's impossible, since nobody else even knows his passcode. Still, the pattern is strange enough that Freya decides to look into it properly. Usually, she lets other people solve the group's problems, but not this time.
She asks Diego to walk her through exactly what happens when a message arrives, step by step, rather than just describing the result. It's only then that he mentions, almost as an afterthought, the new smartwatch his parents gave him for his birthday. It's the one he wears to bed to track his sleep.
Freya asks whether the watch shows message previews on its screen. Diego checks and confirms that it does. It buzzes gently on his wrist every time a notification arrives, showing the first line of the message. He never has to pick up his phone at all.
If a chat app treats a preview shown on a connected watch the same way it treats an opened message, that would explain everything. It would even explain the two-in-the-morning texts he genuinely slept through.
They test it that night, deliberately sending a message after Diego has fallen asleep. Sure enough, it shows as seen within seconds. The watch screen glows faintly in the dark room while its owner doesn't stir at all.
Diego turns off preview notifications on the watch the next morning, mostly so people stop asking if he ever sleeps. The group chat finds a new topic to tease him about within the day.
