《The Headwind Day》封面

Nobody had forecast the wind that met Nell on the fourth morning of her coast-to-coast ride, and by mile ten she had already revised her plan for the day twice.

Sixty miles had looked entirely reasonable on paper, roughly what she'd averaged the previous three days without much trouble. The headwind changed that arithmetic completely, turning gentle rolling terrain into something that felt, pedal stroke by pedal stroke, like riding uphill in both directions at once.

By mile twenty, she was averaging barely eight miles an hour, a pace that made the sixty-mile target feel less like a plan and more like a joke someone else had made up. Her legs burned in a specific, unfamiliar way that had nothing to do with hills. It had everything to do with simply holding a straight line against a crosswind that kept trying to push her off it.

What she had to decide, somewhere around mile twenty-five, was not whether she could physically finish sixty miles against this wind. It was whether finishing today's full distance actually mattered as much as she'd assumed it did before the wind started.

She pulled over at a gas station, more out of a need to think clearly than any real need for water. The tour's flexible itinerary allowed for a shortened day, a train connection to the next stop that would save her the worst of the remaining miles.

Nell sat on the curb outside the station for a full ten minutes, turning the decision over. Had she pushed through purely on stubbornness, she suspected, she would have arrived exhausted and resentful, with nothing left over to enjoy the coastline she'd come specifically to see.

She bought the train ticket. It felt, briefly, like failure. Then, more honestly, it felt like exactly the kind of decision she wanted to be capable of making on a trip that was supposed to be enjoyable rather than a test she had to pass.

Rested, and with the wind finally down, she covered the missed miles the next morning in under four hours, faster and easier than she'd have managed the day before in any conditions at all. Some days, she decided, watching the coastline finally open up in front of her, simply aren't the day.

  1. What made the sixty-mile target feel unrealistic by mile twenty?

An unforecast headwind that slowed her to about eight miles an hour

"By mile twenty, she was averaging barely eight miles an hour" against the unexpected headwind.

  2. What did Nell actually have to decide around mile twenty-five?

Whether finishing today's full distance mattered as much as she'd assumed before the wind started

Her real decision "was whether finishing today's full distance actually mattered as much as she'd assumed it did before the wind started."

  3. What does Nell conclude by the end of the story?

That some days simply aren't the day, and that's fine

She decides that "some days... simply aren't the day," watching the coastline open up the next morning instead.
