The Headwind Day

Nobody had forecast the wind that met Nell on the fourth morning of her coast-to-coast ride, and by mile ten she had already revised her plan for the day twice.

Sixty miles had looked entirely reasonable on paper, roughly what she'd averaged the previous three days without much trouble. The headwind changed that arithmetic completely, turning gentle rolling terrain into something that felt, pedal stroke by pedal stroke, like riding uphill in both directions at once.

Her legs burned in a specific, unfamiliar way that had nothing to do with hills. It had everything to do with simply holding a straight line against a crosswind that kept trying to push her off it.

Rested, and with the wind finally down, she covered the missed miles the next morning in under four hours, faster and easier than she'd have managed the day before in any conditions at all. Some days, she decided, watching the coastline finally open up in front of her, simply aren't the day.
