Callen was already halfway down the untracked slope by the time Anneke finished digging her snow pit. That meant the decision in front of her was no longer whether to ski the line, but whether to follow him.
The pit told her what she'd suspected since the approach: a weak, sugary layer sitting about forty centimeters down. It was the kind that could hold quietly for days and then fail all at once under exactly the wrong amount of weight. Not every slope with that layer would slide. This one, steep and freshly loaded with yesterday's snowfall, was precisely the kind that did.
"Come on," Callen called up, grinning, clearly having found nothing in his own quick check worth mentioning. "It's perfect."
What Anneke wanted, watching him carve a clean line below her, was exactly what he had: an uncomplicated, glorious run on untouched powder. It was the kind neither of them would get again this season if the weather held. Wanting it changed nothing about what the pit had shown her. Rarely had she wanted a run this badly, and rarely had a pit looked this convincing either.
She had skied with Callen for six years, trusted his instincts on nearly everything except, she had slowly come to realize, exactly this. He read terrain by eye and enthusiasm. She had started reading it by layers, ever since a slide two winters back had buried a friend of a friend up to his chest. That slope, too, had looked, from above, no different from this one.
"I'm not following that line," she called down. "Not today."
"You're overthinking a good day."
"Maybe." She was already sidestepping toward the ridge, choosing the longer, mellower route down instead. "Rather overthink it than dig someone out of it."
Callen didn't argue further, though he clearly wanted to. He finished his run alone, whooping once near the bottom in a way that reached her even from the ridge. He waited for her at the trailhead without a trace of resentment, which she appreciated more than she said out loud.
Nothing happened on that slope that day. No slide, no consequence, nothing to prove her right in any way she could point to. She has skied past it a dozen times since and still does not regret the decision, precisely because nothing happening was never the test she'd been applying in the first place.
