The Unexpected Guest

Mateo gets home from work at six o'clock every evening. He cooks a simple dinner and watches the news. Tonight, he puts a pot of rice on the stove. He turns on the television and sits down on the sofa.

Mateo chega em casa do trabalho às seis horas todo dia. Ele cozinha um jantar simples e assiste ao noticiário. Hoje à noite, ele coloca uma panela de arroz no fogão. Ele liga a televisão e se senta no sofá.

The rice starts to boil, and the kitchen smells warm and good. Mateo checks his phone for messages. There are none, so he puts it down again. He thinks about a quiet night alone.

O arroz começa a ferver, e a cozinha fica com um cheiro quente e gostoso. Mateo confere o celular à procura de mensagens. Não há nenhuma, então ele o larga de novo. Ele pensa numa noite tranquila sozinho.

Then somebody knocks on the door. Mateo doesn't expect anyone tonight. He walks to the door and opens it slowly.

Então alguém bate na porta. Mateo não espera ninguém hoje à noite. Ele caminha até a porta e a abre devagar.

"Quinn? Is that really you?" Mateo says, surprised.

"Quinn? É você mesmo?", diz Mateo, surpreso.

"Hi, Mateo! I was in town, so I decided to visit," Quinn says, smiling.

"Oi, Mateo! Eu estava na cidade, então resolvi passar aqui", diz Quinn, sorrindo.

Mateo didn't see Quinn for almost three years. They shared an apartment in college. Now Quinn lives in another city and works as a nurse.

Mateo não via Quinn havia quase três anos. Eles dividiram um apartamento na faculdade. Agora Quinn mora em outra cidade e trabalha como enfermeira.

"Come in, come in! I can't believe you're here," Mateo says.

"Entra, entra! Não acredito que você está aqui", diz Mateo.

Quinn steps inside and looks around the small kitchen. "Something smells amazing. Is that rice?"

Quinn entra e olha ao redor da cozinha pequena. "Que cheiro incrível. Isso é arroz?"

"Yes, but there's plenty for two," Mateo says. "Sit down. Tell me everything."

"Sim, mas tem bastante para dois", diz Mateo. "Senta. Me conta tudo."

They sit at the kitchen table, and Mateo brings out two bowls. Quinn talks about the new job and the new city. Mateo turns off the television. He doesn't need it anymore.

Eles se sentam à mesa da cozinha, e Mateo traz duas tigelas. Quinn fala sobre o novo emprego e a nova cidade. Mateo desliga a televisão. Ele não precisa mais dela.

For an hour, they talk and laugh like old friends. The rice gets cold, but neither of them minds.

Por uma hora, eles conversam e riem como velhos amigos. O arroz esfria, mas nenhum dos dois se importa.

"We should do this more often," Quinn says. She stands up to help with the dishes.

"A gente devia fazer isso mais vezes", diz Quinn. Ela se levanta para ajudar com a louça.

"Next time, call me first," Mateo says, laughing. "But you can always visit without calling."

"Da próxima vez, me liga antes", diz Mateo, rindo. "Mas você pode sempre aparecer sem avisar."
