Dante had no suit, so he rented one. It was for his cousin's wedding. The man at the shop gave him a blue jacket and trousers. Dante tried on the jacket. It was perfect. He paid and went home.
Dante não tinha terno, então alugou um. Era para o casamento do primo. O homem da loja deu a ele um paletó e uma calça azuis. Dante experimentou o paletó. Estava perfeito. Ele pagou e foi para casa.
On the morning of the wedding, he put on the trousers. They were much too long. They went under his shoes and onto the floor.
Na manhã do casamento, ele vestiu a calça. Estava comprida demais. Ela passava por baixo dos sapatos e chegava ao chão.
"No, no, no," Dante said. He looked at the clock. The wedding was at noon. The shop was far away, and it was Saturday.
"Não, não, não", disse Dante. Ele olhou para o relógio. O casamento era ao meio-dia. A loja ficava longe, e era sábado.
His aunt was in the kitchen, and she heard him. She came to the door and looked at the trousers. "Take them off," she said. "Quick."
A tia dele estava na cozinha e o ouviu. Ela veio até a porta e olhou para a calça. "Tire isso", disse. "Rápido."
She found a needle and a box of thread. She sat at the table and folded the bottom of one leg. Her hands moved fast. Dante stood in his shirt and waited. He drank three cups of coffee.
Ela achou uma agulha e uma caixa de linha. Sentou-se à mesa e dobrou a barra de uma perna. Suas mãos se moviam depressa. Dante ficou de camisa, esperando. Bebeu três xícaras de café.
Twenty minutes later, she gave him the trousers. "Now the other leg," she said. Ten minutes after that, she was done.
Vinte minutos depois, ela lhe entregou a calça. "Agora a outra perna", disse. Dez minutos depois, ela terminou.
Dante put them on. They fit, but one leg was a little shorter than the other. He looked at himself in the mirror.
Dante vestiu a calça. Servia, mas uma perna ficou um pouco mais curta que a outra. Ele se olhou no espelho.
"Nobody will see," his aunt said. "Just walk slowly."
"Ninguém vai notar", disse a tia. "É só andar devagar."
At the wedding, Dante stood tall and smiled for all the photos. Nobody saw anything. Later, a man at his table said, "That is a nice suit." Dante only said thank you.
No casamento, Dante ficou de cabeça erguida e sorriu em todas as fotos. Ninguém notou nada. Mais tarde, um homem à mesa dele disse: "Que terno bonito." Dante só disse obrigado.
