The Shift She Picked Up

Anaya had signed up to volunteer at the hospital mostly to get her mother to stop asking about her plans for next year. Her mother, a nurse for over twenty years, had been quietly hoping Anaya would apply to the same nursing program she had attended.

Anaya tinha se inscrito para ser voluntária no hospital principalmente para fazer sua mãe parar de perguntar sobre seus planos para o próximo ano. Anaya had always assumed she wanted the opposite of whatever her mother did. She had spent years listening to stories about twelve-hour shifts and difficult patients, and none of it had ever sounded appealing.

Anaya sempre tinha presumido que queria o oposto do que quer que sua mãe fizesse. Ela tinha passado anos ouvindo histórias sobre turnos de doze horas e pacientes difíceis, e nada daquilo nunca tinha soado atraente.

On her third Saturday shift, an elderly patient named Marguerite refused to eat her lunch and grew increasingly agitated. Although the nurses were stretched thin across the ward, Marguerite still needed someone to sit with her.

No terceiro sábado de plantão, uma paciente idosa chamada Marguerite se recusou a comer o almoço e ficou cada vez mais agitada. Embora as enfermeiras estivessem sobrecarregadas por toda a ala, Marguerite ainda precisava de alguém para ficar com ela.

"Nobody explained anything to me today," Marguerite said, pushing the tray away. "They just keep coming in and out."

"Ninguém me explicou nada hoje", disse Marguerite, empurrando a bandeja para longe. "Eles só ficam entrando e saindo."

Anaya sat down beside her, unsure what she was supposed to do, and simply asked what Marguerite would have wanted explained. It turned out to be small things: what a machine's beeping meant, when the doctor would return, whether her daughter had called.

Anaya se sentou ao lado dela, sem saber o que deveria fazer, e simplesmente perguntou o que Marguerite gostaria que tivesse sido explicado. Acabaram sendo coisas pequenas: o que o bipe de uma máquina significava, quando o médico voltaria, se a filha dela tinha ligado.

Marguerite told her that if someone had walked her through the morning slowly, none of it would have felt so frightening. Anaya spent the next hour doing exactly that, translating the ward's routines into plain, unhurried sentences.

Marguerite disse a ela que, se alguém tivesse explicado a manhã com calma, nada daquilo teria parecido tão assustador. Anaya passou a hora seguinte fazendo exatamente isso, traduzindo as rotinas da ala em frases simples e sem pressa.

By the time a nurse came to check on them, Marguerite seemed calm. The tray that had been left untouched for nearly an hour was finally half-eaten. The nurse thanked Anaya, clearly surprised that a volunteer had managed what the whole staff hadn't had time for.

Walking home that evening, Anaya realized she hadn't been dreading hospital work at all. She had been dreading becoming exactly her mother, in exactly the same job, for exactly the same reasons. She had never once asked if there might be other ways in.

Voltando para casa a pé naquela noite, Anaya percebeu que não temia o trabalho no hospital, afinal. Ela temia se tornar exatamente sua mãe, exatamente no mesmo emprego, exatamente pelos mesmos motivos. Ela nunca tinha perguntado se poderia haver outros caminhos.

She should have asked her mother more questions years ago, instead of assuming she already knew every answer. She looked up occupational therapy programs before reaching the front door, then texted her mother one question: had she ever considered it herself?

Ela deveria ter feito mais perguntas à mãe anos atrás, em vez de presumir que já sabia todas as respostas. Ela pesquisou cursos de terapia ocupacional antes mesmo de chegar à porta de casa, e então mandou uma mensagem para a mãe com uma pergunta: ela mesma já tinha considerado essa área?
