Every Sunday, Halle video calls her grandmother Sigrid. Sigrid lives in another country. The app shows captions under her words. She speaks a different language.
Todo domingo, Halle faz videochamada com a avó dela, Sigrid. Sigrid mora em outro país. O aplicativo mostra legendas embaixo das palavras dela. Ela fala outro idioma.
Today, Sigrid smiles and says something warm. The caption reads: "You look tired and a little sick."
Hoje, Sigrid sorri e diz algo carinhoso. A legenda mostra: "Você parece cansada e um pouco doente."
Halle sits up straight. "Grandma, are you okay? The captions say I look sick."
Halle se senta ereta. "Vovó, você está bem? A legenda diz que eu pareço doente."
Sigrid laughs and shakes her head. She says the same sentence again, in a calm voice.
Sigrid ri e balança a cabeça. Ela repete a mesma frase, com voz calma.
Halle's mom sits next to her. She listens closely. "I think the app made a mistake," she says. "Grandma probably said something nice."

Halle looks at the caption again. It still shows the same strange words.
Halle olha a legenda de novo. Ela ainda mostra as mesmas palavras estranhas.
Her mom picks up her own phone. She opens a different translation app and types in what she remembers.
A mãe dela pega o próprio celular. Ela abre outro aplicativo de tradução e digita o que consegue lembrar.
"Here it is," her mom says. "She said, 'You look tired but happy.' That makes sense now."
"Aqui está", diz a mãe. "Ela disse: 'Você parece cansada, mas feliz.' Agora faz sentido."
Halle laughs with relief. "The first app heard the word 'sick.' But grandma really said 'happy'!"
Halle ri, aliviada. "O primeiro aplicativo entendeu a palavra 'doente'. Mas a vovó disse mesmo 'feliz'!"
Sigrid looks confused. She asks what is funny. Halle explains slowly, and soon everyone laughs together.

"I'm glad it was a mistake," Halle says, "and not bad news."

They finish the call with plans for a visit next month.
