Hattie had worked the rental dock for two summers before she noticed that the orange buoy marking the safe-swim line moved every August. It always shifted a little closer to shore than the harbor's own chart said it should be.
It was a small shift, maybe fifteen feet, easy to miss unless you were the one hauling kayaks past it every day. Only someone who had developed, as Hattie had, an almost physical sense of exactly where it belonged would notice at all. The first summer she'd assumed a storm had dragged the anchor loose. The second summer, watching it happen again on almost the same date, she stopped believing in storms as an explanation.
She raised it with Torvald, the harbor master, expecting a shrug and a maintenance excuse. Never had she seen him go quiet so suddenly, and it made her regret asking so bluntly.
"I move it myself," he said eventually. "Every August fourteenth. Has been fifteen years now."
"Why that date?"
"Por que essa data?"
He didn't answer right away, and Hattie, for once, didn't fill the silence the way she usually did. "There was a swimmer who went out past the line on August fourteenth, a long time back, before your time here. Strong swimmer. Line wasn't the problem, currents that day were, but the line was where everyone's eyes went afterward, looking for someone to blame." He looked out at the water rather than at her. "I couldn't move where the currents run. I could move the line. So every year, I move it in a little, and I tell myself it buys somebody an extra fifteen feet of margin they might actually need someday."
"Does the harbor board know?"
"O conselho do porto sabe disso?"
"The harbor board thinks the chart's just old," Torvald said, with the flat honesty of a man who had stopped expecting anyone to ask him directly. "I've let them think that. It's easier than the alternative."
Hattie didn't report the discrepancy, though she understood, technically, that she probably should have. What surprised her most, walking back to the rental shack afterward, was how little the fifteen feet actually mattered to her now. What mattered instead was the fact that a man she had worked beside for two summers had been quietly carrying this particular date, alone, every year, without a single person on the dock ever noticing.
The following August fourteenth, she found an excuse to be near the buoy when he came out in the small motorboat to shift it. Neither of them mentioned the anniversary. She simply held the boat steady while he worked, and that, it turned out, was enough.
