The Snowed-In Cabin

Andile and two friends rented a mountain cabin for the weekend. They brought food for two days. On Saturday night, the snow began.

Andile dan dua temannya menyewa sebuah kabin di gunung untuk akhir pekan. Mereka membawa makanan untuk dua hari. Pada Sabtu malam, salju mulai turun.

By Sunday morning, the snow was up to the windows. The road was closed. Nobody could leave.

Pada Minggu pagi, salju sudah setinggi jendela. Jalan ditutup. Tidak ada yang bisa pergi.

"We must stay one more day," said one friend. "How much food do we have?"

"Kita harus tinggal satu hari lagi," kata seorang teman. "Berapa banyak makanan yang kita punya?"

They put everything on the kitchen table. There was half a bag of rice. They had three cans of beans and four eggs. They also had two onions and a few carrots.

Mereka menaruh semuanya di atas meja dapur. Ada setengah kantong beras. Ada tiga kaleng kacang dan empat butir telur. Ada juga dua bawang bombai dan beberapa wortel.

"It is not much," Andile said. "But it is enough."

"Tidak banyak," kata Andile. "Tapi cukup."

They played cards all afternoon. The loser had to wash the dishes. Andile lost four times.

Mereka bermain kartu sepanjang sore. Yang kalah harus mencuci piring. Andile kalah empat kali.

In the evening, they made soup. Andile cut the onions and the carrots. They added the rice and the beans. The soup was hot and thick. The wood stove kept the room warm. Outside, the wind was loud.

Pada malam hari, mereka membuat sup. Andile memotong bawang dan wortel. Mereka menambahkan beras dan kacang. Supnya panas dan kental. Kompor kayu menjaga ruangan tetap hangat. Di luar, angin bertiup kencang.

They ate two bowls each. It was the best soup of the whole year. Then they went to bed early.

Mereka masing-masing makan dua mangkuk. Itu sup terenak sepanjang tahun. Lalu mereka tidur lebih awal.

On Monday morning, they heard a big engine. A farmer came down the road on a tractor. It had a wide blade. He pushed the snow to the side. Then he waved at the cabin.

Pada Senin pagi, mereka mendengar suara mesin besar. Seorang petani datang menyusuri jalan dengan traktor. Traktor itu punya bilah yang lebar. Ia mendorong salju ke pinggir. Lalu ia melambai ke arah kabin.

Andile ran outside in his socks. He had a cup of hot soup in his hand. The farmer smiled and took it.

Andile berlari keluar hanya dengan kaus kaki. Di tangannya ada secangkir sup panas. Petani itu tersenyum dan menerimanya.
