Grandma's Spicy Recipe

Ariel wanted to cook for the whole family. She chose her grandmother's chicken stew. She had the recipe on an old card in her grandmother's handwriting.

Ariel ingin memasak untuk seluruh keluarga. Ia memilih sup ayam buatan neneknya. Ia punya resepnya di selembar kartu tua dengan tulisan tangan neneknya.

The card was short. It said: "Onions, chicken, tomatoes, 1 spoon chili pepper, salt." Ariel read it twice. Then she took a big spoon from the drawer. She added the chili pepper.

Kartu itu pendek. Isinya: "Bawang, ayam, tomat, 1 sendok cabai, garam." Ariel membacanya dua kali. Lalu ia mengambil sendok besar dari laci. Ia memasukkan cabainya.

At noon, the family sat down at the table. There were eight people. Ariel put the pot in the middle and smiled.

Pada siang hari, keluarga duduk di meja makan. Ada delapan orang. Ariel menaruh panci itu di tengah dan tersenyum.

Her uncle took the first bite. His face turned red. He drank three glasses of water. Her cousin started to cry. Her father said, "It is… very strong."

Pamannya mencicipi suapan pertama. Wajahnya memerah. Ia minum tiga gelas air. Sepupunya mulai menangis. Ayahnya berkata, "Ini … sangat pedas."

Ariel tried it herself. Her eyes filled with tears. "Oh no," she said. "I made it too hot."

Ariel mencobanya sendiri. Matanya berkaca-kaca. "Aduh," katanya. "Aku membuatnya terlalu pedas."

Her grandmother tasted a small bit. She stopped. Then she began to laugh so hard that she coughed.

Neneknya mencicipi sedikit. Ia terhenti. Lalu ia mulai tertawa begitu keras sampai terbatuk.

"What is funny?" Ariel asked.

"Apa yang lucu?" tanya Ariel.

"My card says one spoon," her grandmother said. "I always mean the small one. The tea spoon!"

"Kartuku tertulis satu sendok," kata neneknya. "Maksudku selalu yang kecil. Sendok teh!"

Then she went into the kitchen. "Bring me yogurt and make some rice," she said.

Lalu ia masuk ke dapur. "Ambilkan yoghurt dan masaklah nasi," katanya.

She stirred the yogurt into the stew. It became soft and pink. They served it over the rice. Now it was mild and warm, and everyone ate two plates.

Ia mengaduk yoghurt ke dalam sup itu. Sup itu menjadi lembut dan berwarna merah muda. Mereka menyajikannya di atas nasi. Sekarang rasanya lembut dan hangat, dan semua orang makan dua piring.

After lunch, Ariel took a pen. On the old card, she wrote "small" before "spoon."

Setelah makan siang, Ariel mengambil pulpen. Di kartu tua itu, ia menulis "kecil" sebelum "sendok."
