The Wrong Reel

Emeline had been asked to do one thing for the library's silent film night: load the correct reel onto the projector. What actually went up on the screen, forty minutes into a packed and quiet auditorium, was a decades-old staff training film about proper shelving technique.

Nobody said anything. That was the strange part. The film had no sound, exactly like the classic drama they had come to see. In the low light, most of the audience simply assumed this was some kind of experimental opening sequence.

Fen, working the ticket table, noticed first and signaled frantically to Emeline through the projection booth window. By the time she understood what he meant, a man on screen was demonstrating, in exaggerated silent-film gestures, the correct way to alphabetize a returns cart.

Had either of them dared to stop the film and admit the mistake, the evening would have ended in five minutes of mild embarrassment. Instead, a boy near the front, clearly unwilling to be the one who didn't understand a supposedly important film, whispered loudly to his date that this must be a metaphor.

"A metaphor for what?" she whispered back.

"Order," he said, with total confidence. "Civilization. The struggle to impose structure on chaos."

It escalated from there. An older man two rows back began narrating the shelving demonstration aloud, in the hushed, reverent tone reserved for silent-era masterpieces. He invented a whole backstory for the man on screen, involving a lost love and a promise made at a library counter. Someone else began quietly weeping during a scene that was, as far as Emeline could tell, about the proper handling of oversized reference books.

What had begun as one small technical error was rapidly becoming an entire audience's collective, unspoken agreement not to be the person who broke the spell.

Emeline, watching all of this unfold from the booth, found herself laughing so hard she had to sit down on the floor, out of sight, for nearly a full minute.

"Do we stop it?" Fen whispered, now beside her, equally unable to keep a straight face.

"If we stop it now," Emeline said, "we have to explain what actually happened. I would honestly rather let sixty people finish believing this is art."

They let it run. By the time the reel ended, on a lingering shot of a perfectly alphabetized shelf, the audience gave it a standing ovation, several people visibly moved. One woman was even overheard telling her husband that it was the most honest thing she had seen at the movies in years.

Emeline never did correct the record. Some mistakes, she decided, deserved to be left exactly as beautiful as everyone had already agreed to find them.
