The Wrong Group Chat

Serena had two chat groups open at once when she typed the message. One was with her three closest coworkers, called "Lunch Squad." The other was with her entire twelve-person department, called "Team Updates."

जब सेरेना ने वह संदेश टाइप किया, तब उसके दो चैट ग्रुप एक साथ खुले थे। एक में उसके तीन सबसे क़रीबी सहकर्मी थे, जिसका नाम "लंच स्क्वॉड" था। दूसरा उसके पूरे बारह लोगों के विभाग का था, जिसका नाम "टीम अपडेट्स" था।

She meant to complain about her manager, Anwar, in the first one.

वह पहले वाले ग्रुप में अपने मैनेजर अनवर की शिकायत करना चाहती थी।

"Anwar just gave me feedback on my slides for the THIRD time today," she typed. "I genuinely think he enjoys watching me suffer. Someone tell him fonts are not a personality."

"अनवर ने आज तीसरी बार मेरी स्लाइडों पर फ़ीडबैक दिया है," उसने टाइप किया। "मुझे सच में लगता है कि उसे मुझे तड़पते देखने में मज़ा आता है। कोई उसे बताओ कि फ़ॉन्ट कोई शख़्सियत नहीं होते।"

She hit send and went back to her spreadsheet, feeling briefly better. It took four minutes for her to notice that her coworker Nadine had responded with a single row of laughing emoji, in the wrong chat. That was how Serena finally understood what she had done.

उसने भेज दिया और अपनी स्प्रेडशीट पर लौट गई, थोड़ी देर के लिए अच्छा महसूस करते हुए। चार मिनट लगे उसे यह नोटिस करने में कि उसकी सहकर्मी नादीन ने ग़लत चैट में हँसने वाले इमोजी की एक पूरी क़तार भेजकर जवाब दिया है। तब जाकर सेरेना को आख़िरकार समझ आया कि उसने क्या कर दिया है।

She scrolled up. The message sat there, fully visible, in Team Updates. Anwar was in Team Updates. Everyone was in Team Updates.

उसने ऊपर स्क्रॉल किया। संदेश वहाँ पूरी तरह दिखता हुआ पड़ा था, टीम अपडेट्स में। अनवर टीम अपडेट्स में था। सब लोग टीम अपडेट्स में थे।

"Oh no," she said out loud, loud enough that Nadine looked over from the next desk.

"अरे नहीं," उसने ज़ोर से कहा, इतनी ज़ोर से कि नादीन ने बगल की मेज़ से देखा।

"What?"

"क्या हुआ?"

"I think I just sent the fonts thing to the whole department."

"लगता है मैंने फ़ॉन्ट वाली बात पूरे विभाग को भेज दी।"

Nadine's expression shifted from amused to genuinely alarmed in under a second. "Delete it. Delete it right now."

नादीन के चेहरे के भाव एक सेकंड से भी कम में मज़े से सचमुच घबराहट में बदल गए। "इसे डिलीट करो। अभी डिलीट करो।"

"I did. Three minutes ago. But he's always logged in on two devices, and I don't know if the notification already went to his phone."

"कर दिया। तीन मिनट पहले। लेकिन वह हमेशा दो डिवाइस पर लॉग इन रहता है, और मुझे नहीं पता कि नोटिफ़िकेशन उसके फ़ोन पर पहले ही चला गया या नहीं।"

For the rest of the afternoon, Serena refreshed her email obsessively, half expecting a meeting invitation titled something ominous. Nothing came. By five o'clock, she had almost convinced herself that Anwar's phone must have been on silent, or that he simply hadn't checked his messages.

बाक़ी दोपहर सेरेना जुनूनी ढंग से अपना ईमेल रिफ़्रेश करती रही, आधा यह उम्मीद करते हुए कि कोई ऐसी मीटिंग का न्योता आएगा जिसका शीर्षक कुछ अशुभ होगा। कुछ नहीं आया। पाँच बजे तक वह खुद को लगभग समझा चुकी थी कि अनवर का फ़ोन साइलेंट पर रहा होगा, या उसने अपने संदेश देखे ही नहीं होंगे।

Then, walking past his office to leave, she saw him at his desk, half smiling at his screen in a way she didn't like. "Serena," he called out, without looking up. "Before you go. My fonts, as you put it, would like a word."

फिर, निकलते समय उसके दफ़्तर के पास से गुज़रते हुए, उसने उसे अपनी मेज़ पर देखा, स्क्रीन को देखकर आधा मुस्कुराते हुए, एक ऐसे अंदाज़ में जो उसे अच्छा नहीं लगा। "सेरेना," उसने सिर उठाए बिना पुकारा। "जाने से पहले ज़रा सुनो। मेरे फ़ॉन्ट, जैसा कि तुमने कहा, तुमसे कुछ बात करना चाहते हैं।"

She stopped in the doorway, deciding whether honesty or a dramatic exit would do less damage. "In my defense," she said slowly, "I stand by the joke. I just deeply regret the audience."

वह दरवाज़े पर रुक गई, यह तय करते हुए कि सच बोलने से कम नुक़सान होगा या नाटकीय ढंग से निकल जाने से। "अपने बचाव में," उसने धीरे से कहा, "मैं अपने मज़ाक़ पर क़ायम हूँ। बस दर्शकों पर मुझे गहरा अफ़सोस है।"

Anwar actually laughed at that, longer than the moment probably deserved, and told her to go home before she embarrassed herself any further.

अनवर इस पर सचमुच हँस पड़ा, उस पल के लायक़ से ज़्यादा देर तक, और उसने कहा कि घर जाओ, इससे पहले कि तुम खुद को और शर्मिंदा कर लो।
