The Stray Cat

Kira walks home from school every day. She takes the same path through the park. The park has tall trees and a small pond. Birds sing in the trees above her.

कीरा हर दिन स्कूल से पैदल घर आती है। वह पार्क से होकर हमेशा एक ही रास्ता लेती है। पार्क में ऊँचे पेड़ हैं और एक छोटा तालाब है। उसके ऊपर पेड़ों में चिड़ियाँ चहचहाती हैं।

Today, the walk feels the same at first. Kira listens to music on her phone. She thinks about her homework and dinner. The path is quiet and empty.

आज शुरू में सैर रोज़ जैसी ही लगती है। कीरा अपने फ़ोन पर संगीत सुन रही है। वह अपने होमवर्क और रात के खाने के बारे में सोच रही है। रास्ता शांत और ख़ाली है।

Suddenly, she hears a small, sad sound. It comes from behind a big bush. Kira stops and takes out her earphones. She listens again, very carefully.

अचानक उसे एक छोटी, उदास आवाज़ सुनाई देती है। वह एक बड़ी झाड़ी के पीछे से आ रही है। कीरा रुक जाती है और अपने ईयरफ़ोन निकाल लेती है। वह फिर से बहुत ध्यान से सुनती है।

The sound is soft crying, like a baby. Kira walks closer to the bush. She looks behind the green leaves. A small gray cat sits there alone.

आवाज़ किसी बच्चे जैसी हल्की सिसकी है। कीरा झाड़ी के पास जाती है। वह हरे पत्तों के पीछे देखती है। वहाँ एक छोटी भूरी-सलेटी बिल्ली अकेली बैठी है।

The cat is thin and very dirty. One of its legs looks hurt. It looks up at Kira with big eyes. Kira feels sorry for the little cat.

बिल्ली दुबली और बहुत गंदी है। उसकी एक टाँग घायल लग रही है। वह बड़ी-बड़ी आँखों से कीरा को देखती है। कीरा को उस नन्ही बिल्ली पर तरस आता है।

"Hey there, little one," Kira says softly. "Are you lost?"

"अरे, छोटू," कीरा धीरे से कहती है। "क्या तुम खो गई हो?"

The cat doesn't run away this time. Kira slowly holds out her hand. The cat sniffs her fingers and stays still. She picks up the cat very gently.

इस बार बिल्ली भागती नहीं। कीरा धीरे से अपना हाथ आगे बढ़ाती है। बिल्ली उसकी उँगलियाँ सूँघती है और स्थिर रहती है। वह बिल्ली को बहुत कोमलता से उठा लेती है।

Kira doesn't know what to do. She can't just leave the cat here. She decides to take it home. Her mom always says she is kind.

कीरा को समझ नहीं आता कि क्या करे। वह बिल्ली को यहाँ ऐसे ही नहीं छोड़ सकती। वह उसे घर ले जाने का फ़ैसला करती है। उसकी माँ हमेशा कहती हैं कि वह दयालु है।

Kira wraps the cat in her jacket. She walks fast toward her house now. The cat is warm against her chest. It starts to make a small sound.

कीरा बिल्ली को अपनी जैकेट में लपेट लेती है। अब वह तेज़ क़दमों से अपने घर की ओर चलती है। बिल्ली उसकी छाती से लगकर गर्म है। वह हल्की-सी आवाज़ निकालने लगती है।

At home, Kira's mom opens the door. "What do you have there?" she asks.

घर पर कीरा की माँ दरवाज़ा खोलती हैं। "तुम्हारे हाथ में क्या है?" वे पूछती हैं।

"I found a hurt cat in the park," Kira says. "Can we help her, please?"

"मुझे पार्क में एक घायल बिल्ली मिली," कीरा कहती है। "क्या हम उसकी मदद कर सकते हैं, प्लीज़?"

Her mom looks at the little cat. "Let's clean her up first," she says.

उसकी माँ नन्ही बिल्ली को देखती हैं। "पहले इसे साफ़ कर लेते हैं," वे कहती हैं।

Kira smiles and carries the cat inside.

कीरा मुस्कुराती है और बिल्ली को अंदर ले जाती है।
