The Smart Fridge Order

Willa's family got a smart fridge last spring. It uses small cameras inside to track what's running low. It orders replacements automatically. Most weeks, it works quietly in the background, and nobody thinks about it much.

विला के परिवार ने पिछले वसंत में एक स्मार्ट फ़्रिज ख़रीदा था। उसके अंदर छोटे कैमरे लगे हैं जो देखते रहते हैं कि क्या चीज़ कम पड़ रही है। वह उसकी जगह नया सामान अपने आप ऑर्डर कर देता है। ज़्यादातर हफ़्तों में वह चुपचाप पीछे अपना काम करता रहता है, और कोई उसके बारे में ज़्यादा नहीं सोचता।

Then the deliveries start arriving. On Monday, a box holds six jars of pickles. On Wednesday, another box holds six more. By Friday, the kitchen counter is completely covered in pickle jars. Willa's younger brother Nolan is stacking them into a small, wobbly tower.

फिर डिलीवरी आने लगती हैं। सोमवार को एक डिब्बे में अचार के छह मर्तबान आते हैं। बुधवार को एक और डिब्बे में छह और। शुक्रवार तक रसोई का काउंटर पूरी तरह अचार के मर्तबानों से ढक जाता है। विला का छोटा भाई नोलन उन्हें एक छोटी, डगमगाती मीनार की तरह जमा रहा है।

"Did you order all these?" Willa's mother asks, staring at the counter when she gets home from work.

"क्या तुमने ये सब मँगवाए हैं?" विला की माँ काम से लौटकर काउंटर को घूरते हुए पूछती हैं।

Nobody has. Willa checks the fridge's app on her phone. She scrolls through the order history and finds twelve pickle orders in ten days. The note on each one reads the same: "Pickle jar detected as empty. Reordering automatically."

किसी ने नहीं मँगवाए। विला अपने फ़ोन पर फ़्रिज का ऐप खोलती है। वह ऑर्डर का इतिहास देखती है और उसे दस दिनों में अचार के बारह ऑर्डर मिलते हैं। हर ऑर्डर पर एक ही नोट लिखा है: "अचार का मर्तबान ख़ाली पाया गया। अपने आप दोबारा ऑर्डर किया जा रहा है।"

Willa opens the fridge door and looks closely at the shelf. This is where the pickle jars are tracked. She notices something strange. The shelf light reflects off the glass jar in an odd way. It makes the jar look empty from the camera's angle, even when it's half full.

विला फ़्रिज का दरवाज़ा खोलती है और उस शेल्फ़ को ग़ौर से देखती है। अचार के मर्तबान इसी शेल्फ़ पर ट्रैक होते हैं। उसे कुछ अजीब दिखता है। शेल्फ़ की रोशनी काँच के मर्तबान पर अजीब ढंग से चमकती है। इससे कैमरे के कोण से मर्तबान ख़ाली दिखता है, भले ही वह आधा भरा हो।

She calls the fridge's support line. A patient technician explains that the camera sometimes struggles with reflective glass under bright shelf lighting. He suggests moving the jar to a different shelf or dimming that particular light.

वह फ़्रिज की सहायता-लाइन पर फ़ोन करती है। एक धैर्यवान तकनीशियन समझाता है कि तेज़ शेल्फ़-रोशनी में चमकदार काँच के साथ कैमरे को कभी-कभी दिक़्क़त होती है। वह सुझाव देता है कि मर्तबान को किसी दूसरी शेल्फ़ पर रख दिया जाए या उस ख़ास बत्ती को धीमा कर दिया जाए।

That evening, Willa moves the pickle jar to a lower shelf, away from the brightest light. She also turns the reflection setting down slightly through the app. If the fix works, she thinks, the deliveries should finally stop.

उसी शाम विला अचार का मर्तबान एक निचली शेल्फ़ पर रख देती है, सबसे तेज़ रोशनी से दूर। वह ऐप के ज़रिए चमक वाली सेटिंग भी थोड़ी कम कर देती है। अगर यह उपाय काम कर गया, वह सोचती है, तो डिलीवरी आख़िरकार रुक जानी चाहिए।

A week passes with no new pickle jars. Willa feels a small, private sense of victory. Nolan, who has been building a tower out of the extra jars all week, looks a little disappointed. He had actually started to enjoy having an emergency pickle supply, just in case.

एक हफ़्ता बीत जाता है और अचार का कोई नया मर्तबान नहीं आता। विला को मन ही मन जीत का हल्का-सा एहसास होता है। नोलन, जो पूरे हफ़्ते फ़ालतू मर्तबानों से मीनार बनाता रहा है, थोड़ा उदास दिखता है। उसे सच में आपात-स्थिति के लिए अचार का अपना भंडार रखना अच्छा लगने लगा था।

"We could order more on purpose," he suggests, only half joking. Willa laughs and tells him the app doesn't work that way. She isn't entirely sure that's true.

"हम जान-बूझकर और मँगवा सकते हैं," वह आधा मज़ाक करते हुए सुझाता है। विला हँस पड़ती है और उसे बताती है कि ऐप ऐसे काम नहीं करता। उसे पूरा यक़ीन नहीं है कि यह सच है।
