The Elevator Avoidance Plan

Derek has a plan for avoiding his ex-girlfriend Renata in the elevator. He has been perfecting it for three weeks.

डेरेक के पास लिफ़्ट में अपनी पूर्व-गर्लफ़्रेंड रेनाटा से बचने की एक योजना है। वह तीन हफ़्ते से उसे निखार रहा है।

Step one: check the lobby before walking in. Step two: if she's anywhere near the elevator bank, take the stairs instead. That means all eleven flights, no matter how unpleasant that sounds at eight in the morning. Step three: if he's already in the elevator and she gets on, stare at his phone. Keep staring until his floor arrives.

पहला क़दम: अंदर जाने से पहले लॉबी देख लो। दूसरा क़दम: अगर वह लिफ़्ट के आसपास कहीं भी हो, तो सीढ़ियों से जाओ। यानी सारी ग्यारह मंज़िलें, चाहे सुबह आठ बजे यह कितना ही बुरा लगे। तीसरा क़दम: अगर तुम पहले से लिफ़्ट में हो और रेनाटा भी चढ़ आए, तो अपने फ़ोन को घूरते रहो। तब तक घूरो जब तक तुम्हारी मंज़िल न आ जाए।

It has worked, more or less, until today.

यह कमोबेश काम करता रहा है, आज तक।

This morning, Derek checks the lobby carefully and sees no sign of Renata. He steps into the elevator feeling confident. The doors are almost closed when a hand reaches through the gap, and the doors slide back open.

आज सुबह डेरेक लॉबी को ध्यान से देखता है और उसे रेनाटा का कोई निशान नहीं दिखता। वह भरोसे के साथ लिफ़्ट में क़दम रखता है। दरवाज़े लगभग बंद हो चुके हैं कि एक हाथ दरारों के बीच से अंदर आता है, और दरवाज़े फिर से खुल जाते हैं।

It's Renata.

वह रेनाटा है।

Derek's stomach drops. He immediately pulls out his phone and stares at it with real intensity. He looks like he's reading something extremely important. The screen is actually just his lock screen.

डेरेक का दिल बैठ जाता है। वह फ़ौरन अपना फ़ोन निकालता है और उसे पूरी तन्मयता से घूरने लगता है। वह ऐसा लग रहा है जैसे कुछ बेहद ज़रूरी पढ़ रहा हो। स्क्रीन पर असल में बस उसकी लॉक स्क्रीन है।

"Derek," Renata says, sounding amused. "You can put the phone down. I already know it's you."

"डेरेक," रेनाटा मुस्कुराते हुए कहती है। "तुम फ़ोन नीचे रख सकते हो। मुझे पता है कि यह तुम हो।"

"I'm just… checking something," he says, not looking up.

"मैं बस… कुछ देख रहा हूँ," वह बिना ऊपर देखे कहता है।

"For three weeks?" she asks. "Because I've noticed you taking the stairs every single morning, even in that ridiculous heat last week."

"तीन हफ़्ते से?" वह पूछती है। "क्योंकि मैंने देखा है कि तुम हर सुबह सीढ़ियों से जाते हो, पिछले हफ़्ते की उस बेतुकी गर्मी में भी।"

Derek finally looks up, caught. "You noticed that?"

डेरेक आख़िरकार ऊपर देखता है, पकड़ा गया। "तुमने यह देखा?"

"Everyone in the building has noticed that. Security asked me if you were training for something."

"इमारत में हर किसी ने देखा है। सिक्योरिटी ने मुझसे पूछा कि क्या तुम किसी चीज़ की तैयारी कर रहे हो।"

He laughs despite himself, mostly out of embarrassment. "Okay. I was avoiding you. It felt easier than an awkward conversation in a small metal box."

वह न चाहते हुए भी हँस पड़ता है, ज़्यादातर झेंप के मारे। "ठीक है। मैं तुमसे बच रहा था। एक छोटे-से धातु के डिब्बे में असहज बातचीत से यह आसान लगा।"

"I figured," Renata says. "For what it's worth, I've been doing the same thing on the third floor. I hide behind the vending machine whenever I see you coming."

"मैंने सोचा था," रेनाटा कहती है। "वैसे, मैं भी तीसरी मंज़िल पर यही कर रही हूँ। जब भी तुम्हें आते देखती हूँ, वेंडिंग मशीन के पीछे छिप जाती हूँ।"

They stand there for a second, both a little stunned. They've each put real effort into avoiding a five-second interaction.

वे एक पल वहीं खड़े रहते हैं, दोनों थोड़े हक्के-बक्के। दोनों ने पाँच सेकंड की एक मुलाक़ात से बचने में सचमुच मेहनत की है।

"This is objectively ridiculous," Derek says.

"यह वस्तुतः हास्यास्पद है," डेरेक कहता है।

"Completely ridiculous," Renata agrees. "Want to just… take the elevator normally from now on?"

"पूरी तरह हास्यास्पद," रेनाटा सहमत होती है। "तो क्यों न अब से बस… लिफ़्ट सामान्य तरीक़े से ही लें?"

"Deal," Derek says. "Though I might miss the stairs. My legs have never looked better."

"पक्का," डेरेक कहता है। "हालाँकि मुझे सीढ़ियों की याद आएगी। मेरी टाँगें इतनी अच्छी कभी नहीं दिखीं।"

Renata laughs. For the first time in three weeks, they ride up together without staring at their phones.

रेनाटा हँसती है। तीन हफ़्ते में पहली बार वे अपने फ़ोन घूरे बिना साथ ऊपर जाते हैं।
