The Canoe at Dusk

Isla had wanted to paddle out to the island one more time before camp ended. Colm had agreed almost too easily, the way he agreed to most things she suggested. Neither of them had checked how quickly the light faded once the sun dropped behind the ridge.

आइला कैंप ख़त्म होने से पहले एक बार और पैडल चलाकर द्वीप तक जाना चाहती थी। कोल्म लगभग बिना सोचे ही मान गया था, जैसे वह उसकी ज़्यादातर बातें मान लेता था। दोनों में से किसी ने नहीं देखा था कि सूरज के पहाड़ी के पीछे जाते ही रोशनी कितनी तेज़ी से ढल जाती है।

"We should've turned back twenty minutes ago," Colm said, squinting at the shoreline, which had become a dark smudge against darker water. "I can barely tell where the dock is anymore."

"हमें बीस मिनट पहले ही लौट जाना चाहिए था," कोल्म ने किनारे की ओर आँखें सिकोड़ते हुए कहा, जो अब गहरे पानी के सामने एक काले धब्बे जैसा दिख रहा था। "अब तो मुझे डॉक कहाँ है, यह भी मुश्किल से समझ आ रहा है।"

"I know. I got us into this," Isla admitted. "If I'd checked the time before we left, we wouldn't be out here now."

"मुझे पता है। मैंने ही हमें इसमें फँसाया," आइला ने माना। "अगर निकलने से पहले मैंने समय देख लिया होता, तो हम अभी यहाँ न होते।"

A gust caught the canoe broadside, and for a moment it tipped further than either of them liked. Colm leaned hard the other way, and the boat settled, though his heart was pounding.

हवा के एक झोंके ने कैनो को बग़ल से टक्कर मारी, और एक पल को वह दोनों की पसंद से ज़्यादा झुक गई। कोल्म पूरी ताक़त से दूसरी तरफ़ झुका और नाव सँभल गई, हालाँकि उसका दिल ज़ोर से धड़क रहा था।

"Sit low, and let's paddle together, not against each other," Isla said, forcing calm into her voice that she didn't entirely feel. "One, two, one, two — match my count."

"नीचे बैठे रहो, और चलो साथ में चप्पू चलाएँ, एक-दूसरे के उलट नहीं," आइला ने कहा, अपनी आवाज़ में वह शांति लाते हुए जो उसे पूरी तरह महसूस नहीं हो रही थी। "एक, दो, एक, दो — मेरी गिनती के साथ चलो।"

They fell into rhythm, the canoe cutting straighter through the chop than it had when each of them paddled at their own pace. The wind was pushing them slightly off course, toward the rocky south end of the lake instead of the dock.

"We're drifting," Colm said. "Should we correct now or wait until we're closer?"

"Now. If we wait, we'll be fighting the wind and the rocks both," Isla said, angling her paddle to steer them back on line.

"अभी। अगर रुके, तो हवा और चट्टानों, दोनों से लड़ना पड़ेगा," आइला ने कहा और चप्पू को मोड़कर उन्हें वापस सीध में ले आई।

They paddled in silence after that, both of them focused entirely on the count and the rhythm. Far ahead, the dock light flickered on, switched on by someone back at camp.

इसके बाद वे चुपचाप चप्पू चलाते रहे, दोनों का पूरा ध्यान गिनती और लय पर था। बहुत आगे डॉक की बत्ती टिमटिमाकर जल उठी, जिसे कैंप में किसी ने जलाया था।

By the time the bow scraped against the dock's floating edge, neither of them spoke for a moment, just breathing hard in the sudden stillness.

जब नाव का अगला हिस्सा डॉक के तैरते किनारे से रगड़ खाकर रुका, तो एक पल के लिए दोनों में से कोई कुछ नहीं बोला, बस अचानक आई ख़ामोशी में ज़ोर-ज़ोर से साँस लेते रहे।

"Never again without checking the time," Colm said eventually, managing a shaky laugh.

"आइंदा समय देखे बिना कभी नहीं," आख़िरकार कोल्म ने काँपती हँसी के साथ कहा।

"Never again," Isla agreed, though she was already, quietly, thinking about how good it had felt to get them both back safely.
