The Magpie's Nest

Once upon a time when pigs spoke rhyme And monkeys chewed tobacco, And hens took snuff to make them tough, And ducks went quack, quack, quack, O!

Érase una vez, cuando los cerdos hablaban en rima y los monos mascaban tabaco, y las gallinas aspiraban rapé para curtirse, y los patos hacían cuac, cuac, ¡cuac, oh!

All the birds of the air came to the magpie and asked her to teach them how to build nests. For the magpie is the cleverest bird of all at building nests. So she put all the birds round her and began to show them how to do it. First of all she took some mud and made a sort of round cake with it.

Todas las aves del cielo acudieron a la urraca y le pidieron que les enseñara a construir nidos. Pues la urraca es el ave más hábil de todas en la construcción de nidos. Así que reunió a todas las aves a su alrededor y comenzó a mostrarles cómo hacerlo. Primero tomó un poco de barro e hizo con él una especie de torta redonda.

“Oh, that's how it's done,” said the thrush; and away it flew, and so that's how thrushes build their nests.

«Ah, así es como se hace», dijo el zorzal; y se marchó volando, y así es como los zorzales construyen sus nidos hasta hoy.

Then the magpie took some twigs and arranged them round in the mud.

Luego la urraca tomó algunas ramitas y las dispuso alrededor sobre el barro.

“Now I know all about it,” says the blackbird, and off he flew; and that's how the blackbirds make their nests to this very day.

«Ahora ya lo sé todo», dijo el mirlo, y se fue volando; y así es como los mirlos hacen sus nidos hasta el día de hoy.

Then the magpie put another layer of mud over the twigs.

Luego la urraca puso otra capa de barro sobre las ramitas.

“Oh that's quite obvious,” said the wise owl, and away it flew; and owls have never made better nests since.

«Ah, eso es bastante obvio», dijo el sabio búho, y se fue volando; y desde entonces los búhos nunca han hecho mejores nidos.

After this the magpie took some twigs and twined them round the outside.

Después de esto, la urraca tomó unas ramitas y las entrelazó alrededor del exterior.

“The very thing!” said the sparrow, and off he went; so sparrows make rather slovenly nests to this day.

«¡Eso es justo lo que hace falta!», dijo el gorrión, y se marchó; así que los gorriones hacen nidos bastante descuidados hasta el día de hoy.

Well, then Madge Magpie took some feathers and stuff and lined the nest very comfortably with it.

Bueno, entonces Marga Urraca tomó plumas y otros materiales y forró el nido muy cómodamente con ellos.

“That suits me,” cried the starling, and off it flew; and very comfortable nests have starlings.

«Eso me conviene», exclamó el estornino, y se fue volando; y los estorninos tienen nidos muy cómodos.

So it went on, every bird taking away some knowledge of how to build nests, but, none of them waiting to the end. Meanwhile Madge Magpie went on working and working without, looking up till the only bird that remained was the turtle-dove, and that hadn't paid any attention all along, but only kept on saying its silly cry “Take two, Taffy, take two-o-o-o.”

Y así continuó, cada ave llevándose algún conocimiento sobre cómo construir nidos, pero ninguna esperó hasta el final. Mientras tanto, Marga Urraca siguió trabajando y trabajando sin levantar la vista, hasta que la única ave que quedaba era la tórtola, que no había prestado atención en todo momento, sino que solo seguía repitiendo su tonto reclamo: «Toma dos, Tafi, toma dos-o-o-o».

At last the magpie heard this just as she was putting a twig across. So she said: “One's enough.”

Por fin la urraca oyó esto justo cuando colocaba una ramita atravesada. Así que dijo: «Con una basta».

But the turtle-dove kept on saying: “Take two, Taffy, take two-o-o-o.”

Pero la tórtola seguía diciendo: «Toma dos, Tafi, toma dos-o-o-o».

Then the magpie got angry and said: “One's enough I tell you.”

Entonces la urraca se enojó y dijo: «Con una basta, te digo».

Still the turtle-dove cried: “Take two, Taffy, take two-o-o-o.”

Aun así, la tórtola seguía gritando: «Toma dos, Tafi, toma dos-o-o-o».

At last, and at last, the magpie looked up and saw nobody near her but the silly turtle-dove, and then she got rare angry and flew away and refused to tell the birds how to build nests again. And that is why different birds build their nests differently.

Por fin, y de una vez por todas, la urraca levantó la vista y no vio a nadie cerca de ella salvo a la tonta tórtola, y entonces se enfadó muchísimo y se fue volando, negándose a volver a enseñar a las aves cómo construir nidos. Y por eso las diferentes aves construyen sus nidos de manera diferente.
