《The Unfiltered Bulletin》封面

Winnie had taken the summer job to build a portfolio, not to become the unpaid editor of a retired man's crime bulletin, but that was, within a week, exactly what she had become.

Percy Vance had run the neighborhood watch newsletter for eleven years, and he wrote every incident with a gravity that suggested, at times, an actual crime wave rather than a misparked car. A missing garden gnome became, in his hands, "a targeted act with troubling implications." A cat sitting on someone's porch overnight was "an unauthorized nocturnal presence, motive unclear."

Winnie's job, as she understood it, was to take Percy's handwritten drafts, type them up, tone them down, and send the finished version to the printer. What she had not understood, on her second Tuesday, was something buried in Percy's draft that week. It was an entire unfiltered paragraph about a neighbor he strongly suspected, with zero actual evidence, of stealing recycling bins for scrap value.

Rushing to make the printer's noon deadline, Winnie sent the file without proofreading the final page. It was a mistake she would not fully register until three hundred copies had already gone out in mailboxes across the neighborhood.

By four o'clock, her phone had six missed calls, all from numbers she didn't recognize, and one very calm but pointed voicemail from the accused neighbor's lawyer.

Had Winnie read that last page even once before hitting send, none of the following week would have happened. It did happen, though, and what followed was less a scandal than a strange, slow-motion education in exactly how seriously some people take a four-page community newsletter.

Percy, to Winnie's genuine surprise, did not blame her. What unsettled him more than the mistake itself was realizing, for the first time, how his own private suspicions read once printed in a real font and mailed to four hundred houses. He had never quite pictured an actual reader on the other end of his sentences before.

"I wrote it because I was angry about my bins," he admitted, sitting across from Winnie at his kitchen table, drafting a correction neither of them wanted to write. "I didn't think anyone would actually believe it."

"Someone always believes it," Winnie said. "That's kind of the whole problem with writing things down."

Together they drafted an apology so careful it took three drafts of its own. Percy, chastened in a way eleven quiet years apparently never had, agreed to something Winnie had been suggesting since her first week: always having a second set of eyes before anything went to print.

The following month's bulletin covered, without embellishment, a broken streetlamp and a well-attended block party. It was, everyone agreed, considerably less exciting to read, and Percy, watching Winnie proofread his final draft in silence, decided that this particular kind of boring was exactly what the job required.
