Zaria had started every game of the season, and until last Tuesday she had never once questioned whether she'd earned it. Then she overheard two defenders talking in the equipment shed, not realizing she was still inside coiling cable behind the net bags, and one sentence stopped her completely.

"Ainsley's been better than Zaria in training for a month. Everyone sees it. Nobody's going to say it, though — her mom's the coach."

Zaria stayed behind the bags until they left, her face hot in a way that had nothing to do with the September heat. She wanted, badly, for the sentence to be wrong. But turning it over on the walk home, she couldn't actually find the flaw in it. Ainsley's passing had sharpened noticeably in recent weeks, her positioning had improved, and Zaria's own performance, if she was honest with herself, had been merely adequate.

She didn't say anything that night. Had she brought it up at dinner, in front of her younger brother, she suspected her mother would have treated it as a joke rather than the real question it was. The championship was in five days, and some part of Zaria wanted badly to let the question wait until afterward, quietly, the way inconvenient things sometimes got permission to wait.

Instead she found her mother alone in the garage on Wednesday evening, sorting cones into a bin.

"Can I ask you something as your daughter, not as a player?"

Her mother set down the cones. "Always."

"Would you ever bench me for Ainsley? If she's actually playing better right now?"

Her mother didn't answer immediately, which told Zaria more than a quick denial would have. "Where's this coming from?"

"I heard some of the team talking. They think you keep me starting because I'm your daughter, not because I've earned it." Zaria made herself keep going. "And I don't actually know if they're wrong."

"You've started every game because you've been our most consistent midfielder since August," her mother said carefully. "That was true a month ago."

"Is it still true now?"

The silence that followed lasted long enough that Zaria understood the honest answer before her mother said anything at all. "Ainsley's had a strong few weeks," her mother admitted finally. "I've been telling myself your experience would matter more in a final. I'm not sure, hearing myself say it, whether that's coaching or just being your mother."

"Then start her," Zaria said, the words costing her more than she expected. "If she's better right now, start her. I'd rather win knowing you picked the right team than start a final I didn't actually earn."

Her mother studied her for a long moment, something between pride and reluctance crossing her face. "That's a harder thing to say than most adults manage."

"I'm not saying it's easy." Zaria picked up a stray cone and dropped it in the bin. "I'm saying I'd rather know."

Her mother didn't promise anything that night, and Zaria didn't ask her to. But two days later, when the starting lineup went up on the locker room door, Ainsley's name was on it, and Zaria's wasn't. For reasons she was still working out, that felt less like losing than she had braced herself for.
