《The Backup Goalkeeper》封面

Kiran had been the backup goalkeeper for three seasons, long enough to know exactly how many minutes of real playing time that added up to: forty-one, spread across three years, mostly in matches already decided.

Jerome had started every important game since they were both twelve. He was, by any honest measure, the better keeper, and Kiran had made a kind of peace with that a long time ago, or believed he had, right up until the regional final.

Jerome went down awkwardly in Tuesday's practice, his ankle folding under him in a way that made the whole team go quiet before he even hit the ground. The diagnosis came back that evening: out for at least six weeks, which meant out, unmistakably, for Saturday's final.

What Kiran felt first was not excitement. It was something closer to shame. Underneath the genuine worry for his friend, arriving almost immediately and impossible to fully suppress, was a small, guilty flicker of hope that had been waiting years for exactly this opening.

He visited Jerome that night, mostly to check on him, though some part of him also wanted, uncomfortably, to be told it was fine to feel what he was feeling.

"You're starting Saturday," Jerome said, before Kiran could even ask. "I've seen you in training. You've always been good enough. You just never got the minutes."

"I don't want it like this," Kiran said, and meant it, even as another part of him, quieter and harder to admit to, very much did.

Had Jerome's ankle held for one more step, Kiran would have spent Saturday exactly where he had spent three years of Saturdays: on the bench, watching, telling himself he was fine with it. Instead, he spent the week before the final barely sleeping, caught between two feelings that refused to cancel each other out.

The final itself went better than he had dared hope. Kiran made two difficult saves and made peace, somewhere in the second half, with the noise in the stands. He helped his team win a trophy that Jerome, that day, would only ever hold on crutches from the sideline.

Lifting the trophy, Kiran searched the crowd for Jerome and found him applauding harder than anyone else in the stadium, his face showing nothing but real, uncomplicated pride.

What surprised Kiran, walking off the pitch afterward, was that the guilt didn't fully disappear just because his friend seemed genuinely happy for him. It settled instead into something he suspected he would carry quietly for a long time: the knowledge that his best day as a goalkeeper had depended entirely on his best friend's worst one.

He never quite decided whether that made the trophy feel less earned or more complicated to hold, and he stopped expecting, eventually, that it ever would resolve into one clean feeling.
