Why the Bear is Stumpy-Tailed

A cunning fox tricks a bear into fishing with his own tail through a hole in the ice, with a very cold and short-tailed result.
One day the Bear met the Fox, who came slinking along with a string of fish he had stolen.
Um dia o Urso encontrou a Raposa, que vinha se esgueirando com um cordel de peixes que havia roubado.
“Whence did you get those from?” asked the Bear.
— De onde você tirou esses peixes? — perguntou o Urso.
“Oh! my Lord Bruin, I’ve been out fishing and caught them”, said the Fox.
— Ah, meu senhor Bruin, eu estava pescando e os peguei — disse a Raposa.
So the Bear had a mind to learn to fish too, and bade the Fox tell him how he was to set about it.
Então o Urso resolveu que também queria aprender a pescar, e pediu à Raposa que lhe explicasse como fazer.
“Oh! it’s an easy craft for you”, answered the Fox, “and soon learnt. You’ve only got to go upon the ice, and cut a hole and stick your tail down into it; and so you must go on holding it there as long as you can. You’re not to mind if your tail smarts a little; that’s when the fish bite. The longer you hold it there the more fish you’ll get; and then all at once out with it, with a cross pull sideways, and with a strong pull too.”
— Ah, é um ofício fácil para o senhor — respondeu a Raposa —, e se aprende rápido. Basta subir no gelo, abrir um buraco e enfiar a cauda dentro dele; e assim deve ficar segurando o quanto conseguir. Não se importe se a cauda arder um pouco; é sinal de que os peixes estão mordendo. Quanto mais tempo o senhor a mantiver lá, mais peixes vai pegar; e então, de repente, puxe-a para fora, com um puxão forte e para o lado.
Yes; the Bear did as the Fox had said, and held his tail a long, long time down in the hole, till it was fast frozen in. Then he pulled it out with a cross pull, and it snapped short off. That’s why Bruin goes about with a stumpy tail this very day.
Pois bem, o Urso fez como a Raposa havia dito, e manteve a cauda por muito, muito tempo dentro do buraco, até que ficou presa e congelada. Então ele a puxou para fora com um puxão forte, e ela se partiu curta. É por isso que Bruin anda por aí com a cauda tosquiada até hoje.
