Why the Bear is Stumpy-Tailed

A cunning fox tricks a bear into fishing with his own tail through a hole in the ice, with a very cold and short-tailed result.
One day the Bear met the Fox, who came slinking along with a string of fish he had stolen.
एक दिन भालू की मुलाकात लोमड़ी से हुई, जो चुराई हुई मछलियों की एक लड़ी लिए दबे पाँव चली आ रही थी।
“Whence did you get those from?” asked the Bear.
"यह तुम्हें कहाँ से मिलीं?" भालू ने पूछा।
“Oh! my Lord Bruin, I’ve been out fishing and caught them”, said the Fox.
"अरे, मेरे भालू महाराज, मैं मछली पकड़ने गई थी और इन्हें पकड़ लाई," लोमड़ी ने कहा।
So the Bear had a mind to learn to fish too, and bade the Fox tell him how he was to set about it.
तो भालू का भी मन हुआ मछली पकड़ना सीखने का, और उसने लोमड़ी से कहा कि वह उसे बताए कि यह कैसे किया जाता है।
“Oh! it’s an easy craft for you”, answered the Fox, “and soon learnt. You’ve only got to go upon the ice, and cut a hole and stick your tail down into it; and so you must go on holding it there as long as you can. You’re not to mind if your tail smarts a little; that’s when the fish bite. The longer you hold it there the more fish you’ll get; and then all at once out with it, with a cross pull sideways, and with a strong pull too.”
"अरे, यह तो तुम्हारे लिए बड़ा आसान हुनर है," लोमड़ी ने जवाब दिया, "और जल्दी सीखा जा सकता है। तुम्हें बस बर्फ पर जाना है, एक छेद काटना है, और अपनी पूँछ उसमें डाल देनी है; और फिर जितनी देर हो सके उसे वहीं रखे रहना है। अगर तुम्हारी पूँछ थोड़ी सुलगे तो चिंता मत करना; तभी तो मछलियाँ काटती हैं। जितनी देर तुम उसे वहाँ रखोगे उतनी ही ज़्यादा मछलियाँ मिलेंगी; और फिर एकदम से उसे बाहर खींच लेना, एक तेज़ तिरछे झटके के साथ, और पूरी ताक़त से।"
Yes; the Bear did as the Fox had said, and held his tail a long, long time down in the hole, till it was fast frozen in. Then he pulled it out with a cross pull, and it snapped short off. That’s why Bruin goes about with a stumpy tail this very day.
हाँ; भालू ने वैसा ही किया जैसा लोमड़ी ने कहा था, और अपनी पूँछ बहुत, बहुत देर तक उस छेद में डाले रखा, यहाँ तक कि वह कसकर जम गई। फिर उसने उसे तेज़ तिरछे झटके से बाहर खींचा, और वह टूटकर अलग हो गई। इसीलिए आज भी भालू महाराज की पूँछ छोटी और मोटी है।
