After two years of letters, pen pals Keiko and Yusuf finally meet in person when his exchange program brings him to her city.

Keiko and Yusuf have written letters to each other for exactly two years. It started as a class project between their two schools, one in Japan and one abroad. Neither of them expected it to turn into something so important. Over time, their letters grew longer. They covered favorite foods, worries about exams, and small jokes only the two of them understood.
Keiko e Yusuf trocam cartas um com o outro há exatamente dois anos. Começou como um projeto escolar entre as duas escolas deles, uma no Japão e outra no exterior. Nenhum dos dois esperava que aquilo se tornasse algo tão importante. Com o tempo, as cartas deles foram ficando mais longas. Elas falavam sobre comidas favoritas, preocupações com provas e piadinhas que só os dois entendiam.
Today, Yusuf's exchange program finally brings him to Keiko's city for a full semester. Keiko waits at the arrivals gate, holding a small handwritten sign with his name on it. Her hands feel colder than the airport actually is. She has practiced what to say a dozen times on the train ride over. Now every word has disappeared from her head.
Hoje, o programa de intercâmbio de Yusuf finalmente o traz para a cidade de Keiko por um semestre inteiro. Keiko espera no portão de desembarque, segurando uma placa pequena, escrita à mão, com o nome dele. As mãos dela estão mais frias do que o próprio aeroporto. Ela tinha ensaiado o que dizer dezenas de vezes durante a viagem de trem até ali. Agora, todas as palavras tinham sumido da cabeça dela.
When Yusuf walks through the doors, he looks exactly like his photos, though somehow taller than she imagined. For a second, neither of them says anything. Two years of letters suddenly feel strange next to an actual, real person. Around them, other families hug and call out names, but Keiko and Yusuf just stand there, smiling awkwardly.
Quando Yusuf atravessa as portas, ele parece exatamente como nas fotos, embora de algum jeito mais alto do que ela imaginava. Por um segundo, nenhum dos dois diz nada. Dois anos de cartas de repente parecem estranhos ao lado de uma pessoa real, de verdade. Ao redor deles, outras famílias se abraçam e gritam nomes, mas Keiko e Yusuf ficam ali parados, sorrindo sem jeito.
"I brought something," Yusuf says finally, pulling a small notebook from his bag. It's full of every letter Keiko has ever sent him, printed and kept together. Keiko laughs, surprised, and admits she has saved every one of his too. She keeps them in a box under her bed.
"Eu trouxe uma coisa", diz Yusuf por fim, tirando um pequeno caderno da mochila. Está cheio de todas as cartas que Keiko já enviou a ele, impressas e guardadas juntas. Keiko ri, surpresa, e admite que também guardou cada uma das cartas dele. Ela as mantém numa caixa debaixo da cama.
They walk out of the airport together, talking faster than either letter ever allowed. If the semester goes well, Yusuf might apply to study here again next year. For now, though, they just have three months. Neither of them plans to waste a single week of it. Keiko already has a list of places she wants to show him.
Eles saem do aeroporto juntos, conversando mais rápido do que qualquer carta jamais permitiu. Se o semestre for bem, Yusuf pode se candidatar para estudar ali de novo no ano que vem. Por enquanto, porém, eles só têm três meses. Nenhum dos dois pretende desperdiçar uma única semana disso. Keiko já tem uma lista de lugares que quer mostrar a ele.
