On the first Tuesday, Helena stood in the grocery store for a long time in front of the cereal aisle, unable to remember which brand she usually bought. A woman nearby was arguing gently with a toddler about a different box entirely. Helena found herself watching the argument longer than was strictly polite, then caught herself doing it. She moved on to the next aisle without a cart full of anything she'd actually planned to get.
On the second Tuesday, she picked up the dry cleaning Soren had dropped off the week before — two shirts, a jacket, a dress she hadn't worn since a wedding in the spring. The woman behind the counter, who Helena had spoken to perhaps a dozen times over the years, asked how she was doing, the ordinary kind of question that expected an ordinary kind of answer. Helena said fine, and meant, mostly, that she intended to keep saying it until it became true by repetition.
On the third Tuesday, she went to the gym for the first time in six weeks, and found that her body had quietly forgotten routines it once knew without thinking. She ran less than she used to, more slowly, and was surprised by how little this bothered her, given how much almost everything else lately had. Afterward she sat in the car in the parking lot for eleven minutes before starting the engine, not crying exactly, just still.
On the fourth Tuesday, Soren asked, over dinner, whether she wanted to talk about it yet, and Helena said not yet, in a tone she hoped sounded like an answer rather than a door closing. He didn't push. He never really did, which she had come to understand, slowly, as its own kind of doing — a decision, repeated daily, not to ask twice.
Had the clinic called with different news six weeks earlier, this month would have looked nothing like the one she'd actually lived. There would have been appointments instead of errands, a different vocabulary filling the ordinary Tuesdays instead of cereal and dry cleaning and eleven quiet minutes in a parking lot. Helena thought about this only in passing, the way you notice a road you didn't take without wondering, too seriously, where it would have gone.
What she noticed instead, walking home from the gym on the fifth Tuesday, was that the ordinary errands had started to feel less like distraction. More and more, they felt like the actual shape of her days returning to her, slowly, item by item. The cereal aisle no longer stopped her. The dry cleaner's question no longer required a rehearsed answer. She still hadn't said the word out loud to anyone but Soren, and even then only once, briefly, in the dark.
She let herself into the apartment, set her bag down, and started, without deciding to, making a list for the next week's groceries. Cereal came first, the brand she finally remembered, then everything else the ordinary week would require of her.
